Exhaust System
An exhaust system is a system in a vehicle that is made up of several components that are designed to exhaust the burnt gases away from the engine. An exhaust system of the car helps in the reduction of noises made by the combustion process in an engine. This system helps in the release of harmful gases away from the vehicle caused by the combustion of fuel. A proper exhaust system can help in improving the performance of a car. In some cases, an exhaust system cleans the harmful fumes, emitting from the vehicle, to keep the environment clean and safe from further damage. In case of poor performance of exhaust system, vehicle owners go for the replacement of exhaust system with Performance Exhaust SystemThe performance exhaust system can improve the looks as well as the performance of a car.
How Does an Exhaust System Work?
...
... An exhaust system has consisted of several components that are exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, muffler, resonator, and tailpipe.
Exhaust Manifold
This part is used for collecting exhaust gases from cylinders and directing them into the exhaust pipe. This pipe then expels the fumes away from the vehicle. The exhaust manifold is usually made from steel and cast iron. It has some special curves and bends which increase the efficiency of the exhaust system.
Catalytic Converter
Catalytic convertor is also referred to as ‘cat’. It takes the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine and by using redox (oxidation and reduction) reaction and converts these harmful toxic gases and pollutants into less toxic gases. Catalytic converters are used with internal combustion engines. It converts harmful fumes into carbon dioxide and water vapors. The process of oxidation converts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. These result gases are also harmful to the atmosphere but are less harmful as compared to the gases produced by the engine. Usually, a catalytic converter lasts up to 100,000 miles distance and the replacement of a cat can be expensive. Common causes of its failure are unburnt fuel, exhaust leak, or any damage that happened externally.
Muffler
As clear from its name, the muffler minimizes the sound produced by the engine. It increases the gas flow of the exhaust and a better flow of gas can result in the better performance of a car. Minor damage or a hole can affect its functioning and can disturb the ability to muffle the sound.
Resonator
Like a muffler, the resonator is also the part used for controlling the sound of an exhaust system. It organizes or tunes the vibrations coming from the engine. A resonator is either installed before or after the muffler. It also helps in improving the efficiency of exhaust flow.
Tail Pipe
The tailpipe is the last component connected from the muffler or resonator and extended out of the car for the emission of fumes and gases.
An illuminating engine light, consumption of more fuel by the engine, and bad smells coming from your car can be the signs of a poor exhaust system. If you are assuming any of these, it's time to replace your exhaust system.
