A great deal of employers are recognizing the existence of workplace violence and harassment and devising solutions and schemes to address the problem. An increase in consciousness is ordinarily accompanied by a decrease in tolerance for incidents of abuse.

Violence and harassment at the workplace may badly compromise a work environment. For the victim, abuse may lead to anger, depression, guilt, self-doubt in regards to competency, anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder type symptoms. Abuse may be as detrimental for other workers at the workplace as it's for the victim. Workers may no longer feel as safe and comfortable at work. This may lead to lost productivity and decreased work performance. Overall worker morale may drop and the employer's character may be jeopardized.

Recruiting and holding back staff may become more challenging. In the absence of policies, the employer may be subject to legal proceedings from victims.

Increased knowledge of these policies and procedures helps in reducing the stress as an effect of an incident.

A great deal of elements of an efficient education and training program include: Clarifying roles and responsibilities, educating staff in regards to reporting procedures, training of crisis intervention/victim support personnel (where suitable), training and educating those charged with investigating incidents, intercommunicating with other agencies such as police, community and social services, increasing worker consciousness in regards to rights and available assistance and increasing consciousness of applicable legislation and the employer's policies and procedures.
