Immigration minister recommended that Canada is on target to meet their immigration targets for 2021.

Marco Mendicino said 26,600 new permanent residents were conceded in January, in a video meeting with Bloomberg news. That translates to approximately 10 percent increase from January 2020, before lockdown.

Mendicino said that with new admission and immigration in February, the government is just about 40% in front of the speed expected to meet the 2021 immigration targets of 401,000 new permanent residents.

27,332 candidates were invited for the permanent residency by the federal government on February 13, through the well-known process of the Express Entry System, around five times more than the past record-breaking draw. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) welcomed every single candidate who qualified for the Canadian Experience Class.90 percent of these applicants were in Canada at the time of the draw.

... in March 2020, the number of permanent residents fell around 50%. There were only 184,370 new permanent residents at the end of 2020 compared with 341,175 of every 2019.

This low number of new immigration implies Canada's population development moved back to a stop in 2020. In an average year, immigrants make up around 80% of Canada's population growth.

With an ultimate objective to make up for the low number of new immigrants,Canada increased the immigration targets over the next three years. Increasing from 401,000 this year to 421,000 in 2023.

Canada is prioritizing on immigration candidates who are in Canada, while travel limitations are still in place. The government of Canada has not delivered any details on when or how to travel limitations will be lifted. Until further notice, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, their families, essential laborers, and international students are among the key gatherings excluded from travel limitations.
