During the times when journalism involved only print then ethics were more exercised and prominent worldwide. Digital Journalism paved the way in the 1970s after the invention of computers. This came as an opportunity for every individual to become a journalist if they desired.

Digital journalism that is composed of instant news updates live feeds, and discussions have now crossed the thin line between unethical and ethical journalism, leaving consumers skeptical and dissatisfied. News consumers now have no other choice than to rely on critical thinking to differentiate between dumbfounding and credible sources. On the way to deliver sensational-exclusive breaking news, the media fails to differentiate between propaganda and real science impersonating as science.

The availability of the internet with the entire world has gifted the revered freedom of expression to every individual for writing and posting their thought on the web. The humongous use of the internet has widely distorted the holy space of journalism.

To understand that why ethics are important in journalism, let’s have an analogy involving the human muscle. When not used or exercised, the human muscles become lazy, weak, and less noticeable. However, when worked upon, the human muscle gets strong, grows, and gets noticeable. Similar is the case with unethical journalism where the articles are weakly framed, lack evidence, and are factually incorrect. These exist but aren’t given enough attention to customers.

Ethical journalism comprises hard evidence, factual information, objective information, opinions of all parties, punctuation, and spelling. Ethical journalism, similar to an exercised muscle is backed by strong content, endures strongly, and leaves a mark.

The reader gets overwhelmed by unethical content supplied to them via the internet in form of exclusive breaking news.

Why is ethical journalism important?

It is a journalist’s responsibility to supply balanced, truthful, objective, and factual information while refraining from conflicts of interest and should also take into consideration society’s privacy. However, with the enormous power involved, the stakeholders aim at revealing the shortcomings of other avenues which come along with their own set of responsibilities to act ethically and honestly. Journalists have with them the power to radicalize the society of what they perceive and how they behave. This provides objective information to people for interpreting what is being tried to convey depending on their discretion.

Sensationalism doesn’t have space in an ideal article as this might save the space from speculation and rumor.

Consumers have the birth-right of following factual and truthful information instead of running behind exclusive breaking news. With the lack of ethics, the profession of journalism will eventually decay. Journalists must work hard to develop guidelines, ignoring skeptics and pushing their boundaries to guide a remarkable reinvention of ethics in journalism. The future and passage of revolution depend largely on such steps.


The smallest measures contribute

Even the most minute factors can help journalists gauge whether they’re heading on the ethical or unethical pathway. Cross-checking the facts, checking punctuation, grammar, and spelling, referring to authentic sources, and validating the material. These are key ethics that must be followed by news channels while producing exclusive breaking news. However, focusing on speed but being incorrect isn’t expectable. Democracies of the world depend heavily on media for criticism. The citizens too depend on media for explaining to them the nuances of complex terminologies and getting expert opinions on intricate topics. This is why media must refrain from sensationalism and readers must also choose wisely.
