Every wondered why you ache all over your body after even a tad bit of exercise? Sometimes, these pains occur in parts you did not even realise you could experience pain. This happens because literally every part of the body is made of muscle tissues. When there is overuse or even a minor injury in any of these tissues, we experience pain.
Why do sore muscles occur?
Sore muscles, or muscles aches, are a common occurrence. Almost everyone has experienced sore muscles at least once in their lifetime. While it is hard to pinpoint one single cause of sore muscles, overuse of muscles is a very common cause. This happens due to physical exertion such as exercise after a considerable break, cycling, running or any other activity. Another common reason for muscle aches is when one skips out on warmups or cool downs post exercise.
Other causes include injuring the muscle while doing heavy physical activity, stress and tension. However, not all muscle sores can be chalked up to either of these reasons. Sometimes, muscle aches can occur due to medical conditions as well. Common viral or bacterial infections such as ...
... the flu are often accompanied by muscle aches. Conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are also commonly cited as causes for muscle aches.
Common home remedies for muscle aches
Muscle aches can often be treated at home itself. Some of the most common methods to reduce discomfort caused by muscle aches include giving a heat or cold compresses at regular intervals for a period of one to three days. This relieves the pain in the muscles by destressing the tension. The easiest way however would be to rest the muscle that is under pain.
Some other measures to relieve pain in the aching muscles include gently stretching the affected muscle at regular intervals of time. One might also be advised to avoid any sort of high-impact activity during this period of pain to reduce any further damage to the affected muscle. If the muscle ache is chalked up to stress, then activities such as yoga and deep-breathing can be effective muscle relaxers to ease the tension.
Another common method is to use over-the-counter relievers such as a muscle pain relief gel or a cold gel pack. However, sometimes even the best pain relief gel might not give as much relief as one might have hoped, despite regular usage. In event of persisting pain despite home treatment, one must immediately see a doctor to further investigate the condition.
How can muscle aches be avoided?
When muscle pain is caused due to physical activity or tension, it is easy to take measures to avoid developing them. Before exercising, one must always take care to stretch all the muscles. Always incorporate warm ups and cool downs as part of the exercise routine to avoid any extra stress on one particular muscle. Exercise regularly, rather than doing it once in a while, to avoid developing muscle aches often. If one’s work requires them to be seated in the same position for long periods of time, it is advisable to get up at regular intervals to stretch the muscles. Always pay attention to what your body is telling you after a particularly arduous activity and stop if the pain persists or is unbearable.
