Water Damage Cleanup In Melbourne:
When most people think about water damage to a home or business, scenes of floods across the region likely come to mind and are shown continuously on 24-hour news channels. In reality, however, a small percentage of losses from water damage are associated with storms or floods.
These losses indeed get more publicity because they occur in groups and tend to be more serious, but it is very likely that if you suffer a loss due to water damage, it is because of a plumbing problem. This is the good news because there is nothing you can do to prevent storms and little you can do to prevent storm damage, but there are things you can do to prevent water damage from plumbing problems.
Water damage from plumbing accidents:
The most serious accidents generally happen at home or work when there is a break in the waterline and no one is there. This is common in businesses, where a broken water supply line can cause water spills overnight or throughout the weekend before it is discovered. Among the perpetrators are the following: fittings inflated in water heaters located above office areas; Automatic coffee machines that ...
... break down and continue to fill and skip the pot overnight; Broken lines to a sink, toilet, or ice maker; Faulty fire sprinkler systems. And even a water pipe breaks on the roof.
Similar problems with supply lines are common in homes, but other common causes include: The hot or cold water hose running into the washing machine is broken; Dishwashers and washing machines continue to fill and overflow when the floating ball is not working properly; Toilets that flush, stop and continue running; And bathtubs that are full and forgotten.
Preventative measurements:
As you can see from all of these examples, the easiest thing you can do to reduce or prevent water damage in your home or business is to turn off the main water line when you are away for a long time. Some of the worst days of water damage losses are right after major holidays or popular vacation times when people return home.
That's when they find out that the water is leaking for who knows when and when the damage is severe and the cleaning and repairs are extensive. How long you want to stay away without turning off the water in your home or business depends on how much risk you are willing to take.
But simpler and smaller steps can be taken by shutting down your home's water supply to avoid common water damage situations. For example, never leave your home with a dishwasher, washing machine, or toilet that has not stopped working. Also, if you will be away for more than a day, at least turn off the hot and cold water in the washing machine. This by itself will eliminate a common cause of water damage.
Finally, if the water service in your home is interrupted, be sure to turn off all faucets and showers that were running when the water was turned off. Serious water damage can occur when faucets and showers are left unintentionally open and water service is restored when the owner is away.
So you can see that many of the losses from water damage, and the pain that accompanied them, are largely avoidable if you are willing to take a few simple precautions.
