Education is a tool that strengthens, enlightens and brightens us as humans to differentiate in the most basic of daily practices. It works as the most fundamental base of our life, working as a guide that helps us navigate our daily lives most simply and easily. For example, washing your hands. The action may be simple in itself but it is one of the most basic practices that we follow, this is because at a certain age we were educated that these practices are good for us and will help us lead a healthy life. While these simple acts may seem like something we often practise, some people are unaware of these fundamental aspects of daily life.

How illiteracy is affecting India?
Thanks to the digitization that the illiteracy rate has seen a drop in recent years, but it hasn’t been eradicated yet. A study in 2020 shows that over 10.1 million kids have been a victim of child labor due to illiteracy. Not only has illiteracy affected the children but also the youth of the nation who seek employment. No company wants to hire an illiterate person thus rendering them helpless in this world of technology.

An ...
... article in Economic Times shows that the employment rate dropped by a major 7.8% by November 2020. Illiteracy is the major cause due to which India suffers. Kofi Annan once said, “Literacy is the bridge between misery and hope”. That being said though illiteracy brings forth a magnitude of problems, making people literate is the cause that needs to be strained for a better future.

What role does Education play in this?
Traditionally, the word education triggers the perception of school, colleges, etc. The type of bookish education we receive during our initial lives. But that isn’t the only type of education we receive, we are educated about our custom, culture and society. The education we receive teaches us to differentiate between good and bad, right and wrong, etc. These values create our base as a fellow human being.

When people are educated they become better citizens. Education also plays a humongous role in employing the youths of today. Every company asks for educational proof before hiring candidates. And that proof comes at a price so high that not everyone can afford. Education has become a business for the money-hungry institutions, leading to the massive illiteracy rate in India.

Why should education be free?
Education is the basic right of every human irrespective of one’s caste, color or creed. In countries like Finland, Norway, Sweden, etc. education is provided for free of cost or at a low cost. Education is the pillar that supports our nation and uplifts it, without proper education a nation can't grow. As Elizabeth Warren says “A good education is a foundation for a better future”.

Students face a multitude of obstacles while planning on taking education in India, Though the Indian government provides various government facilities for students they are majorly focused on primary and rarely secondary education. This leaves students half-educated and it is known that half knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance.

Furthermore, more and more students seek loans because of the costly education services pitting them in the debt hole for the majority of their lives. Thus education needs to be free on all levels of learning. If education is imparted without any payment then what a world will we be able to see. Education should be free because it will help create a better citizen and a better citizen will create a better nation.

upskillUtoday plans to convert this vision to reality by making sure students all over India get proper education at the minimal of costs. upskillUtoday helps bridge the gap between the students and educators to bring education directly to the students and vice-versa.
