If your organization wants to implement ISO 14001, and gain certification for an environmental management system (EMS) based on the standard, you might be overwhelmed with figuring out where to start. To help you with this task, the following is an overview of the 12 steps needed to make sure that nothing is missed during your implementation and preparations for certification:

1)Obtain management support – Management support is complex. Without this support your implementation of ISO 14001 will almost certainly fail. You need to have a good sales pitch to assure your management that ISO 14001 is a good idea, and if you need a little help take a look at this ISO 14001:2015 benefits of early transition white paper and this Project proposal for ISO 14001:2015 implementation presentation.

2) Identify legal requirements – Making sure you now identify the legal and other requirements for your EMS is another crucial step in ensuring that your implementation is successful.

3) Define EMS scope – To make sure you know the limits of what you need to do, you need to define the scope of your EMS. The readymade ...

ISO 14001 documents are available to download online that helps to implement and define environmental management system effectively to prevent the inclusion of areas of your business that do not affect the environment. The main tools for determining space are environmental policy and the environmental aspect (your interaction with the environment); these are the first documents you will need to create for EMS.

4) Define EMS procedures and processes – This will include the processes and processes you identify as necessary to prevent negative environmental influences and to ensure consistent and adequate results in responding to emergency situations.

5) Implement EMS procedures and processes Most likely, these processes are already linked to processes in your organization such as tracking waste from your organization. Not all processes need to be documented, so it is important to decide what documentation should be done to prevent environmental damage.

6) Perform training and awareness – Employees should have training on what ISO 14001 is and why you are, as well as any changes to the process they are involved in. It is important that everyone in your organization knows what you are doing with your EMS and how they fit into this equation.

7) Choose a certification body – The certification body is the company that will ultimately come to comply with the requirements of ISO 14001, as well as audit your EMS processes to see if the system is effective and improved. It is best to visit several certification bodies to determine what is right for your company, as this can be a very important step in determining how effective your implementation is.

8) Operate the EMS; measure and keep records – This is when you will collect the records that will be required during an audit to show that your processes meet the requirements set out for them. Records also show that the processes are effective and that your EMS is being upgraded as needed. Certification bodies will recognize the exact length of time this will take to ensure that they are mature enough to show compliance.

9) Perform internal audits – The certification body wants you to do an internal audit of each process before you can audit the certificate. This will give you a chance to make sure that the processes are doing what you had planned, and if not, you will have a chance to fix any problems that you find. The ISO 14001 Auditor Training - Online Course can be useful tool to teach ISO 14001 internal auditing skills and the techniques to measure the effectiveness of an Environmental Management System through an internal audit.

10) Perform management review – As important as the support that management provides for the implementation of ISO 14001 is the involvement of management in the ongoing maintenance of EMS. To ensure that processes are effective and have adequate resources for improvement, management needs to review specific data from EMS activities of the EMS and react to that data appropriately.

11) Implement corrective actions – In order to fix problems and improve the system, you need to use corrective actions to find the root cause of any problems found and take action to correct that root cause. These problems can be identified during your measurements, internal audits, and management review.

12) Certification audit – Here the certification body will review your documentation to verify that, on paper, that you have addressed all the necessary requirements of the ISO 14001 standard. The auditors will issue a report outlining where you comply and where there are problems, so that you have a chance to implement any corrective actions to address the problems.

A good plan will help a lot when you work to implement and certify an EMS per ISO 14001, so do take the time to plan and know what resources you need – this will save you time and resources later on.
