Generator Basics
Portable camping generators generally use gasoline, diesel, propane, or solar power. Which one you choose depends upon what you specifically need from it. Gas and diesel-fueled generators both put out a similar amount of power. They can both power heavy appliances but diesel generators burn fuel slower and require less maintenance. Propane generators are incredibly similar to diesel and gas but they don’t put out as much pollution or noise. I recommend going for a quality inverter generator as they have low noise levels and provide a more steady stream of power. I suggest talking with a professional as well as doing your research, you can never know too much.

How Much Power Do You Need
Before purchasing your new portable generator, think about how much power you are going to be using. If you only need enough power to charge some mobile devices and have your lights on, you can go for a lower wattage generator. These lower-wattage generators are lighter and more inexpensive. If you are planning to camp with many people or be running a lot of appliances at the same time, you should choose ...
... a fairly high powered generator. I would recommend finding one that produces at least 3000 watts in this scenario. I suggest making a list of all the different power sources you will be using and how often. This will help you choose what generator will work best for your camping needs.

Noise
Another reason why I say inverter generators are better is that they produce much less noise than conventional ones. Especially if you are going to be sleeping in a tent, using an inverter generator will allow you to get a nice, quiet night's sleep. Conventional generators are more suited for RV use as they are pretty loud and can cause a big disturbance if you are sleeping in a tent. I try to aim for around 65 decibels when I’m choosing a generator for camping in a tent. Also keep in mind that the bigger the generator, the more noise it will put out.

Price
Price is a big factor when buying anything, and a portable generator is no different. It’s important to remember not to just purchase the cheapest one because it can cost more in the long run when you factor in maintenance expenses. Find one that meets your most important needs while still being in your price range. Always look around and compare the prices before purchasing your generator. Read the reviews and see what information you can find about how the product lasts over time and the quality.

Portability
Portability is incredibly important if you are going to be lugging around a generator when going camping. Try finding the generator that has all the qualities you are looking for without being too heavy. You may need to do some research to find the perfect one, but it will be worth it if you can find a generator that you can easily bring everywhere you go while camping. I always try to go to the store to find a portable generator so that I can see the size and shape. Especially if weight and size are an important factor for you, I would suggest looking in person.

Fuel
Many generators run on regular gasoline, but choose one that has a type of fuel you can easily access. The more power output, the more fuel it will use. Keep this in mind when bringing it camping and always pack extra fuel. Know how long your generator can run and how much it takes to refill it. This will give you a good idea of how much fuel to bring to run your generator as long as you need. Stay away from buying a generator that has more wattage than you will use as it will most likely fun out of fuel quicker than one that has the perfect wattage for you.

Appliance Protection
Smart protection, overload protection, and surge protection are a few examples of the protection you will need to keep appliances and electronics safe when they are plugged into your generator. This type of protection helps to prevent a surge of power from destroying your devices when connected to the generator. One of the major risks from a surge like this happening is a fire, which you want to avoid at all costs, especially when in a tent.

Final Thoughts
Do your research and find the best camping generator for you. Try to look for an inverter generator as I believe they work the best while being of good quality. Know how much power you will need for your camping experience and find a generator that will fulfill that need. Don’t purchase a generator that produces a lot more power than what you will use because they run out of field quicker and can be bulkier. Make sure the portable generator you want has some form of appliance protection to prevent ruining any electronics plugged into it or fires from starting. Go and look at them in person if you can to get an idea of how big and heavy they are. Just make sure that the generator you want to buy checks all your boxes and fits your needs.
