Badrinath - Holiest Of Cities
There are few spots in the world as sacred as Badrinath. Ever since times immemorial, the town has enjoyed a highly revered status. The reason behind the sanctity attached goes back to an old legend which says that this was the spot where the Badri Van was located where Lord Vishnu spent some time on earth.
Located on the banks of the holy river Alakananda, Badrinath is a scenic spot. Nestling between the mountains of Nar and Narayana, the town has a charming scenic appeal, that not only enchants the devotees but also other tourists. The Neelkanth peak that can be seen in the background makes for an amazing backdrop. The natural beauty and favorable climate of Badrinath makes it a favorite with tourists and has earned it the sobriquet of Garhwal Queen.
The main attraction in Badrinath is the temple of Badrinath which is believed to have been built by Adiguru Shankaracharya. According to a popular belief, it is the abode of Lord Vishnu and is also one of the four temple town in the country. The waters in these springs carry medicinal properties that can cure many ailments. Most of the devotees who visit the town ensure that they take a dip in the tank. According to popular legends, the tank is the abode of Agni, the God of Fire. Other revered springs in the area are Narad Kund and Surya Kund. Badrinath is an important place for Hindus and it is believed to be the gateway to Heaven for departed souls. Most of such rites are performed at Kapal, a platform in the banks of River Alaknanda.

A mysterious boulder is present in Badrinath which is believed to have the impressions of Sheshnag, the mythological serpent. The Chandrapaduka boulder is a must visit for devotees for it is believed to hold the footprints of Lord Vishnu. The source of River Alaknanada is a major draw for the adventurous.
