Electric cars are finally our present and not a science fiction future, but despite their growing popularity, it has still been hard to find a truly affordable and family-friendly vehicle. The iconic MG brand has changed all that with the MG ZS EV. It's the perfect vehicle for families in Brisbane, and once you know the MG ZS specs, you'll understand exactly why.

Promise Delivered
MG has been promising an electric vehicle that works for the family at an affordable price, and they've delivered this year. And while the initial price given in the pre-order stage was good, it was even better when MG decided to drop the price another $3,000 (and refund anyone who had already pre-ordered).

What does this mean? It means, first of all, that MG isn't kidding about their commitments. It further means that they now offer the most affordable electric car in the country, and that's not even including the generous eight-year/160,000km battery warranty.

Power and Punch

... is not a disappointment here. The 105kW/353Nm motor has a 44.5kWh battery pack, and the range--certified by the WLTP--is a whopping 263km. This motor works with a single-speed automatic transmission and FWD and comes with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

If you've got a 50kW fast charger, you can get this up to 80% capacity in just minutes, making it perfect for the family constantly on the move. If you've got a normal 7kW setup, you get a full charge in seven hours. It's completely feasible to leave every morning with the whole 263km range at your disposal.

Styling and Comfort
Some electric cars look like they were deliberately designed to be "quirky," and too often that translates to just plain ugly. Not so the MG. This is a handsome car that just the way an MG should. It doesn't stand out in the SUV segment as something weird or odd, which we liked.

Inside, we like the easy-to-use satellite navigation, a generous sunroof that lets in light and gives the kids a better view from the back, and, as you'd expect from electric, this is a nice, quiet ride. There's plenty of boot space at 359L (and 1187L with the seats down). Driving is comfortable, too, with immediate responsiveness in the pedals and rapid acceleration.

Safety and Tech
This MG comes with a full range of safety features that drivers have come to expect with modern cars. You'll get adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and speed assist.

The infotainment system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the six-speaker sound system offers gorgeous surround sound. And we loved the adjustable regenerative braking system. You tell it how aggressively you want it to launch to deliver the amount of power back to the battery that you want. Eco, Normal, and Sport driving modes also work well and deliver noticeable effects.

We loved the ZS EV, and it seems like many in Brisbane do: the local CEO of MG Australia isn't even going to drive one because there's been so much demand from customers. For 2021, this is the family-friendly electric car to beat.
