That era witnessed massive exploitation against the untouchable Dalits. He, however, attended formal education at Mhow cantonment (presently in Madhya Pradesh). At his school, he observed a great deal of discrimination against students from Dalit and other lower communities. He himself was not allowed to drink water from the common well, not allowed to play with his contemporary, and in fact, made to sit separately and away from the higher caste students. From that time on, he had pledged to change the existing conditions of the backward classes and ill-treated sections of the society.

This was because the untouchables in Mahad were denied to use the lake water or even enter the premises.
