When charged, lithium ions from the cathode are driven to the anode through an electrolyte solution. However, lithium-iron batteries can get overheat and produce a runaway chain reaction and can catch fire. To prevent this, Tesla’s new model uses individual cells containing cathode and anode in protective shells.
