What is Gout?

Also known as, gouty arthritis, gout is metabolic in nature. It causes joint stiffness, swelling, acute pain, and tenderness, in addition to fever resulting from the body’s inflammatory response to sharp crystal deposits in the joints, known as tophi.

What are the Affected Sites?

Gout can occur in any joint of the body, with the large joint of the big toe as the most common site. The joints of the knees, ankles, hands, elbows and wrists may also be affected.

What are the Causes?

There are two types of gout, both with unknown cause. The first is primary gout, which is attributed to a defective purine metabolism mechanism. It shows up as either overproduction or retention of uric acid. It affects postmenopausal women and men age 40 and above.

Secondary Gout afflicts the older population, following the path of diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, sickle cell anemia, and renal disease, where uric acid level rises due to the breakdown of nucleic acid.
What are the Principal Reasons for the Increase of Gout?

The principal reason for the increase of ...
... gout has been traced to an increased preference for processed sugared foods, in consonance with an unhealthy lifestyle. In the recent past, elevated uric acid was attributed to the high intake of foods with high purine content such as organ meats, sardines, beans, mushrooms, and anchovies.
Recent research, however, has discovered that regular intake of fruit juice, fructose-rich fruits and soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, increased the risk of developing gout. Fructose, a known inhibitor of uric acid excretion, readily converts to fat, resulting in weight gain that increases joint pain.
What are the common risk factors for the development of gout?

Some factors increase the risks of developing gout. These are the common risk factors:
● Lack of physical exercise and Obesity
● Elevated blood cholesterol and triglyceride level
● Diabetes and Hypertension
● Excessive alcohol consumption
● Heart and kidney disease
● Excessive low carbohydrate, low fat, high protein dieting
What are the Available Treatment Modalities?

Damage to joints and adjoining areas can occur if gout remains unchecked, so it is important that treatment be initiated before lasting damage occurs. Although chemically formulated medications are available to address the symptoms during an acute attack, natural organic remedies have also been found to be effective in the long run.
What are the most effective natural home remedies during an acute attack?

During an acute gout attack, the objective is to alkalinize the blood and relieve acute pain. Natural oral remedies may be taken for pain relief. Below are some of these pain relievers:
Apple Cider Vinegar: put one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and take 2-3 times a day. The amount of vinegar may be increased up to 2 tablespoons, as tolerated by the patient. The acidity in the apple cider should help relieve acute pain. A tablespoon of honey may also be added to boost* the body’s anti-inflammatory response while making the taste tolerable.
Ginger Root Powder: Mix equal amounts of fenugreek, turmeric and ginger root powder. Take one teaspoon of this mixture in a cup of warm water twice daily. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger root are effective in relieving pain and inflammation.
Lemon Juice: Mix the juice of half a lemon in a glass of water, and take three times a day. This natural remedy can alkalinize the patient’s urine and help rid the body of excess uric acid, in addition to contributing to pain relief.
Cherries and Strawberries: With their high antioxidant and anthocyanin levels, these delicious fruits can reduce inflammation and minimize gout flare-ups. Consume 15 to 20 pieces of cherries and strawberries a day during an acute attack, or a minimum of 6 pieces to ease swelling and pain.
Bananas and Apples: These fruits are as beneficial as they taste. They are effective natural home remedies for gout. Two bananas a day may help liquefy uric acid crystals so they can be flushed out through urination. The Vitamin C and malic acid in apples should act to neutralize uric acid in the body and control inflammation and pain.
There are also natural topical remedies that achieve relief of pain and swelling resulting from gout

Epsom Salt with its high magnesium content, Epsom Salt can help relief pain, lower blood pressure and relaxes muscles. Add 2 cups of Epsom Salt to warm bath water as a body soak.
Activated Charcoal is said to absorb uric acid. Mix half a cup of charcoal powder with water and soak the affected part of the body for half an hour. Alternately, make a paste and apply directly on the affected joint, and then rinse with lukewarm water.
Ginger root and turmeric powder moistened with pure coconut milk are used to make a paste that can be applied as a poultice to the affected joint. These contain potent anti-inflammatory properties that effectively reduce pain and swelling.
Apply cayenne or capsaicin cream to help alleviate pain.
Immersing the inflamed joint in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day will reduce pain and inflammation.
Most importantly, patients must keep in mind that lifestyle change is our first line of defense

Drink 2 liters pure water daily
Exercise regularly
Lose excess weight
Avoid highly sugared drinks
Eliminate alcohol
