Calling all homebodies and houseplant enthusiasts! When you think of winter plants and winter container gardens, do you picture the inside of your house, rather than your patio or covered porch? When you “work in the garden,” are you taking care of winter flowering plants on your kitchen counter, rather than kneeling in the chilly backyard? If so, I am right there with you.

Wintertime is such a challenging season. To be honest, spring, summer, and fall are not so easy either! Today, I am writing to those for whom plants and container gardens are an indoor-only hobby. Perhaps your winter plants stay warm in a four-seasons room, or you have a sunny shelf where your houseplants thrive. I am all about a house studded with pots, leaves, plant stands, and even some winter flowering plants. Houseplants can raise our spirits, clean the air, and add much-needed color and life to otherwise drab days.

When you hear the phrase “fairy garden” or “miniature garden,” do you picture a large, complicated outdoor fairyhood? While many gardeners do take their fairy gardens to such great heights, there are also plenty ...
... of ways to create miniature fairy gardens, or what I like to call “mini moments,” right next to the houseplants you already have. Say you have a snake plant in a pot on the floor, or even a Baby Tears trailing plant on a bookshelf. These are the perfect container plants for mini moments. With just a pinch of creativity and a few miniature accessories, you can add magic to your indoor winter plants. Here are a few of my favorite miniature scenes:

1) Garden in a Pot. For a minimalist miniature garden, simply add a teeny-tiny table and chairs set to your houseplant container. Nestle the furniture under the leaves, so they are partially obscured. Add a miniature accessory to the table and press a few stepping stones into the soil to complete the look.

2) Take a Seat. Do you have a miniature tree or another standalone winter plant in a pot? Use pieces of miniature fencing to “fence in” three sides of the miniature tree. Then plant a miniature park bench under the tree on the fourth side. This creates a tiny park atmosphere that will get imaginations racing.

3) Home Sweet Home. Some of my own houseplants like to grow to one side of their plant pots. They are just ornery. No matter how much I adjust them, I end up with a plant spilling out of one side of the pot, while the other remains bare. The solution? Add a miniature cottage to your lopsided winter container garden. There are dozens of varieties from which to choose. Think about the personality of your houseplant. Is it evergreen, trailing, flowering, or otherwise? Then pick a house that matches it. A few stepping stones can help fill out the rest of the container.

4) Adopt a Fairy. Last, but not least, is my favorite way to add adventure to my houseplants. Adopt a fairy! Garden fairies and other wee folk come in all different shapes, sizes, and personalities. Some read books, others doze in the sunlight, and still others are paired with animal friends. Choose the fairy that fits you and your home.

Are you ready to take the plunge and add some miniature garden accessories to your indoor winter plants and winter container gardens? Now is the time to stock up on miniature accessories, fairy houses, fairy figurines, and more. Then you can swap them in and out of your houseplants to your heart’s content. I hope these ideas help you think outside the box when planting and planning containers inside your home.
