Finally, it is February! This January seemed to last for years. But now we are on to a month of football, groundhogs, and Valentines. I have always thought of February as the beginning of the springtime holiday season. Valentine’s Day kicks off a slew of holidays—St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, etc.—that help carry us into warmer weather and sunnier days. During the snowy weeks of waning winter, I hold tight to those holidays, looking to them as a lifeline. Simply put, they give me hope.

This week, I am thinking about Valentine’s Day. While it is often considered a romantic day for couples, I have always enjoyed spending February 14th spreading love to my friends, family members, and acquaintances. We could all use a little more love this year! And gardeners are in luck. Valentine’s Day is famous for its focus on flowers and plants. This year, I challenge you to forgo the typical bouquet of roses and try out something new: a winter container garden.

For an easy Valentine’s garden gift, look no further than one of my favorite winter container plants, String of Hearts. This delicate, trailing houseplant ...
... makes a sweet gift for those who appreciate all things green and growing. Winter plants and winter container gardens are excellent gifts, especially when placed in a carefully-chosen container and decorated with miniature accessories and fairies. Keep reading for some of my top ideas for Valentine’s Day scenes you can create in a winter container garden.

1. Animals: What could be cuter than two snuggly animals? Think of the gift recipient’s favorite animal. Find two miniature versions of that animal and “plant” them alongside a winter flowering plant. A small DIY sign completes the scene when it says “I can’t wait to see our love grow,” or “A String of Hearts for Two Lovebirds.”

2. Best Friends: Do you celebrate “Galentine’s Day”? Gift your BFF a winter container garden he or she will cherish. Start with a winter container plant in a colorful pot. Then add a miniature bench and two fairy friends. Sprinkle on some “fairy dust” glitter for good measure!

3. Gnomes in Love: Fairies are not the only residents of the miniature garden! Not everyone knows that gnomes are always getting struck with the love bug. Pick out two cute gnomes for your miniature garden gift. Arrange them around the winter plant, add a few toadstools, and finish the scene with a white picket fence. An accompanying card or DIY garden sign could declare, “Love the Gnome You are With” or “I Love You Gnome Matter What.” The pun possibilities are endless.

4. Hearts: String of Hearts is my favorite Valentine’s Day miniature plant. This year, I am on the search for a heart-shaped container to match! I would like to pair a green-leafed version and a variegated variety in one heart-shaped winter container garden. Perched on my desk, the two String of Hearts plants will help brighten up my space and ensure that love is in the air (or at least in the container)!

What will you create this season? While the cold and snow are keeping us inside, consider creating a winter container garden to gift to your loved ones. String of Hearts is one place to start, but there is a whole world of miniature plants that you could grow to love.

Miniature Gardening' offers miniature plants, accessories, fairies, garden tools & dollhouse furniture to create enchanting miniature landscapes for containers or your yard. Story telling and imaginary fairy garden from 'Miniature Gardening' bring the playful kid out in all of us. Filled with intrigue and mystique each little miniature garden scene you create is a snapshot of such a dream.
