The importance of regular maintenance on radio and cell towers can hardly be overemphasized. You must carry out routine maintenance on these devices to ensure that they are in good shape and function properly. Plus, a correctly functioning radio tower is crucial for an improved communication system.
Many problems that eventually lead to tower damages can be repelled and controlled at the initial stages, except for a few unavoidable ones involving extreme weather conditions. But it is always criminal when early signs are neglected because the results almost often prove too costly. Regular maintenance, however, is key to ensuring that your telecommunication towers remain in perfect working conditions.
What Is A Radio Tower?
Radio towers refer to tall structures designed to function as a support for antennas used in broadcastings and telecommunication houses. Sometimes referred to as telecommunication masts, radio towers are responsible for providing broadcast and communication signals. And many factors affect the strength and quality of the signal a radio tower generates. Before erecting a telecom tower, ...
... there are specific factors you must consider. Including the design, height, and weight of the building, and location, among others. These factors all differ depending on the type of tower, and the basic types of radio towers are:
1) Guyed towers: Guyed towers are commonly found in industries. They are made of slender steel and can be either light or heavy-weighted. They are often supported by layers of steel guyed cables anchored to the ground, and they are designed to provide high strength and efficiently versatile signals.
2) Lattice towers: Lattice towers are considered high utility towers because they can perform multiple functions. They are handy in situations where numerous panels or antennas are to be mounted. But in addition to being a communication tower, they can also function as watchtowers and electricity transmission towers.
3) Self-support towers: self-support towers, also known as free standing towers, are either available in 3-stands triangular designs or a 4-legged lattice structure. They offer a more improved communication system and can be used for almost all wireless communication applications. They are often solidly erected and more stable than other towers, withstanding huge loads and strong winds. Self-support towers are also preferred because they are not space-consuming, and they are easily transported and installed.
Regular Tower Maintenance Tips
The functionality levels and longevity of your mast are very much dependent on how you maintain it. Regular maintenance helps ensure that your tower and other associated equipment are secure whiles also improving their signals' strength. Here are some expert tips for regular maintenance of radio towers.

Inspect rods, radials, and surge arresters regularly to ensure they are in good shape.
Apply jet-lube and other antioxidants to prevent further corrosion.
Inspect hardware connections, and make sure to fix any breakouts.
Replace worn-out parts as often as you can.
Check antenna connections. Ensure that all bolts and nuts are well-tightened and the clamps are well-positioned.
Trim any tree branches within and around your mast to avoid unnecessary interference.

Conclusion
Regular maintenance is vital if you wish to make your radio tower last longer and function more appropriately. However, you should also note that a more in-depth inspection and thorough maintenance is required after 3 - 5 years, depending on the type of tower you operate.
