Oral health refers to the overall health of your oral cavity which includes your teeth and gums. So, not just your teeth but your gums too require a proper care.
Keeping your teeth and gums clean is the 1st step to achieving a good oral health. Next comes the question: how to keep your teeth and gums clean?
Brushing your teeth is definitely the utmost important thing to do in order maintain a good oral health. But, regular brushing in the proper technique is crucial.
How to brush your teeth?
• You should always brush your teeth twice a day, after meal. You should not brush immediately ...
... after eating, especially if you have taken something acidic in your meal. There should be a gap of 15 mins to half an hour between your meal and brushing.
• Brushing should be very gentle and in a circular up and down motion. You should brush your teeth for approximately 2 minutes each time. While brushing, you should keep in mind to clean all the surfaces of your teeth properly.
• You should use a soft bristle toothbrush and fluoride containing toothpaste for brushing. Soft bristle toothbrush won’t hurt your gums and will clean the edges perfectly. You must use a toothbrush that fits properly in your mouth. If you are too busy or have some medical conditions that makes brushing tough for you, you can consider using electric or battery-operated toothbrush. It can be used by anyone as it a very efficient tool to keep your oral cavity clean and healthy. It cleans your tooth and gums and removes plaque more effectively than manual brushing.
The next most important thing to do for a good oral health is to floss your teeth.
Why to floss your teeth?
Bacteria tends to accumulate in between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. In order clean those surfaces it is very important to floss your teeth everyday.
How to use a dental floss?
• You have to cut around 18 inches of the floss and wind it around the middle fingers of each hand, hold it tightly between the thumbs and forefingers
• Then you have to place the floss in between two teeth and by means of a rubbing motion, slowly move it up and down.
• You need to repeat the same process for every tooth individually. You must take care not to hurt your gums in the process.
• In case if you can not floss properly, you can also use an inter dental brush and follow the same process.
After brushing and flossing your teeth, the next most important thing for maintaining your oral health is to use a fluoride containing mouthwash on a regular basic. A mouthwash has antibacterial properties and helps to keep your oral cavity germ free for a long time.
Other than the teeth and gums, cleaning your tongue is also very important to maintain a good oral health. Bacteria seems to grow in a unclean tongue. So, while brushing it is necessary to clean your tongue with your toothbrush or a separate tongue cleaner.
You should always keep your brush and flosses in such a place that it doesn’t get infected. Using an infected toothbrush can be very harmful for your oral health.
These are the basic tips to maintain a proper oral health. If you have any further queries, you can contact us at our dental clinic.
