In the United States alone, 53 million people are now living the freelancer lifestyle. The is one in every 3 people that have made the leap to live the ultimate freelancer lifestyle. There are many reasons why people are quitting their jobs, or changing their work environment to choose this lifestyle.

Perhaps you have been bitten by the travel bug, or maybe you are a parent who wants to be at home with your children. You could be craving some more freedom in your life, or even just don’t want to have a boss breathing fire down your neck anymore. Whichever it is, choosing to be a freelancer is a very rewarding and satisfying lifestyle.

The problem is, how do you know when it is time to make the switch? You do not want to make a financial mistake, especially if you have a family to support. When it comes down to it, you are the one who has total control of your life decisions.

A little support in the right direction can be a good help, here are five signs it is time to make the leap.

You Are Cheating on Your Main Job
If you constantly find yourself having numerous “coffee” breaks, just to ...
... keep up with your freelancing side job, it’s a great sign that your business is doing well. Is your client list ongoing, with a steady stream of income? If you had more time to put into it and hired an assistant, could you see it growing?

If you keep your main job while building a successful freelancing job, it could go one of two ways. Realistically, there is just not enough time. Either your freelancing gig will never grow to the point you want it to, or you will reach burnout. Then both careers will take a hit and suffer.

You Know It Is Financially Better
Check the math to see if your freelancing side job is doing well. If given more time, does it have a lot of growth potential? Freelancing careers can be very lucrative, there really is no cap on how much you can make.

This, of course, depends on your career choice. By depending on your job that doesn’t satisfy your soul, you are spending energy in places that will not aim towards the success of your own business.

All this being said, you must have a backup surplus of money to support you in case things go sideways. It would be crazy to leave a secure job for the ideal lifestyle without a backup plan.

You Feel Lifeless at Your Regular Job
If your job is not satisfying your soul, figure out a plan and leave. Life is too short to be spending most of your waking hours on something that doesn’t pull at your heartstrings. When your cubicle walls seem to be getting smaller and smaller, and all you can think of is making more of those dog collars to keep up with your customer demand, it’s time to plan the move.

You are not being a quitter. In fact, you are more of a quitter by NOT following your passions and designing your own life. Do not take the easy way out, this is your life, you have one shot – take the chance.

It Is Something You Love
If you are not deeply passionate about your side job, do NOT make it your full-time job! If you are just doing this for the money, eventually you will burn out. It is highly likely that you will be spending more time building this business than you ever did on all of your previous jobs combined.

Spending all these hours will never feel like a chore if you are doing something that you truly love.

You Feel like You Know All the Skills Needed
A majority of people do not take the leap to become a freelancer because they do not believe in their abilities. This can be true to a point. If you have spent so much time in one job, your abilities are probably very linear and restricted to your current job description.

If you know you have what it takes to get your freelancing career to the next level, then what are you waiting for? If you feel you need a bit more education on a couple skillsets, feel free to contact us.
