One of the main concerns of those living in Colorado is heavy rainfall. With a geography peppered with creeks, rivers, and other water passageways, there is always the possibility of overflow that can cause damage to surrounding properties. In view of this situation, the local governments that compose the system of Colorado have each come up with certain measures that protect its residents. It is not unusual for each city to have rules and regulations in order to maintain and control the drainage of storm and surface waters. These were designed in the hope that the risk of water runoffs are minimized and thus lead to less water damage in Colorado.

A large portion of the flood prevention is placed on the shoulders of the developers. Most cities mandate them to construct an easement that should be a minimum of 16 feet in width to provide enough drainage in the area. Also, any drainage that occurs naturally should not be altered or blocked to make the water flow more naturally.

Water damage in Colorado is minimized by having the maintenance and control of the quality of storm water drainage viewed as a matter of ...
... public importance. It has taken on the principle that the safety and health of its residents may be affected by the failure to do the tasks properly. Thus, the local governments are required to formulate a system of regulation and enforcement to control their drainage systems. An example of this is the move to reduce runoff and improve the infiltration of stormwater. Another example is the need for maintenance access to the detention and water quality pond outlets to ensure that they are properly working at all times.

Floodplains are a source of special concern when it comes to water damage in the state. These are areas that are more likely to experience the flooding because of where they are located. As a result, the local governments make sure that erosion in the area is minimized to lessen the risk of flooding. In addition to this, cities in the state prohibit any constructions in the area which may create a barrier in the natural floodways.
