India was the first country to mandate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by passing and implementing the Companies Act. Due to this, India's developing landscape has seen massive change and growth in the last few years. This amendment, passed in 2014, mandates companies with either a cash flow or assets of Rs.500 crore, a turnover or sales of Rs.1000 crore, or a net profit of Rs.5 crore or more, to contribute 2% of their three year's average net profits towards socially responsible initiatives. The law describes various methods, mechanisms, calculations, and contribution areas to spend these funds.

The Government of India's Ministry of Corporate Affairs recently issued directives to corporates expanding on the previous CSR laws. They mean to include centrally and state-funded academic institutions, universities, and incubators.

The Growing Importance of Corporate Social Responsibility:

Partially due to the mandatory nature and partly due to the generous spirit of this Act, it attracts many global corporations, NGOs, and universities. It dramatically promotes India's UN sustainable development goals.

According ...
... to reports by Dasra, an additional approximate Rs.4 lakh crore spending needs to happen towards social causes for India to achieve its UN SDG goals by 2030.

Quite often, CSR reflects the impacts of business on society in the context of sustainable development. Thus, it's emerging as a critical feature of business philosophy. Another significant perspective towards CSR shifts our focus on responsibility towards all stakeholders, including our community, and not just maximising shareholders' profits. By behaving ethically and contributing towards economic development, companies like Tata Group, Infosys, Bharti Enterprises, ITC, Indian Oil are improving the quality of life of the workforce and the local communities, and the society in general.

Benefits of CSR to Rural India Development:

The benefit from rural India CSR's is of great significance and immense relevance. Where do you think is the CSR initiative needed the most? A large portion of our population works in the unorganised sector and resides in our country's rural villages, where most basic amenities and infrastructure are lacking. Some key areas of rural development for CSR programs include education, sanitation, access to water, healthcare, and agricultural markets.

● The preliminary decision of scaling up rural development and initiatives lies with the state government. However, corporates' role in completing their social responsibilities in providing benefit from rural India CSR's in their operational vicinity is imminent. It extends to being a good corporate citizen and also acting beyond the required compliance. Companies can achieve this through resources and skill sharing.

Also, working with rural communities requires an in-depth understanding of village issues.

● One can facilitate it by working in partnership with rural implementing agencies and rural NGOs. They have relevant community connections and related required capabilities. Such agencies act as bridges between rural areas and corporates wanting to contribute and rural communities seeking to develop themselves further. Active citizen participation, along with efficient rural governance, can make this empowerment happen. With the government’s coordination and cooperation, one can effectively provide NGOs, and corporate partnerships, the benefit from rural India CSR's.

As tracked by Dasra reports, total funds for socially impacting initiatives, especially for providing benefit from rural India CSR's, are increasing. However, their channelling needs efficiency to create an impact on a large scale.

● According to experts, classifying and tracking investments into fundamental causes may generate more CSR investment in current under-funded initiatives. This challenge is mainly due to various un-verified NGOs in India. Thus, the need for multi-sector partnerships is increasingly becoming worthy of attention.

● These partnerships between corporates, academic universities, and NGOs will ensure that these social initiatives are well researched, expertly, efficiently implemented, and adequately funded. Knowing the international university's immense research expertise in various fields, collaborating with Indian universities and NGOs presents remarkable opportunities for conducting socially impactful research.

Conclusion

India, home to a 6th of the world population, has a significant role and an absolute responsibility to fulfil its UN SDGs. It is not just for India's progress but also for all humanity's progress. A focus on philanthropy to empower people at the bottom of the pyramid, the SDGs' achievement from the grassroots level, like the NITI Ayog, is vital for India. It is helping successfully in moving towards a more sustainable future and reaching its development goals.
