How To Protect Your Skin From Uv Rays
For all the busy time you we would spend outside, odds are we've heard an admonition or two about the fact that it is so imperative to wear sunscreen. It is no surprising fact that most skin-related issues are brought about by a lot of exposure to those bright UV rays. Our skin is more likely to get a sunburn, sun damage during the midday hours when the Sun’s UV rays are the strongest. Constant exposure during these hours can also lead to skin cancer.
Let’s understand the problem deeply. The primary sorts of UV rays that can influence our skin are UVA rays and UVB rays. They penetrate much deeper into the skin causing much more collagen damage at the dermis level and causing the skin to lose the elasticity and firmness faster and increasing dullness.
Effects of UV Rays
Now, let’s break down UV into UVA and UVB.
UVA rays cause skin damage that leads to tanning as well as skin ageing and wrinkles.
UVB rays cause sunburn and play a key role in developing dull and weak skin.
The use of Sunscreen in fighting minimising the effects of UV rays
Sunscreen is a topical product available ...
... in various formats which helps in shielding our skin from the UV rays to an extent. It helps in minimising the risk of harmful effects of UV rays like sunburn, sun damage on the skin. It is always advisable to limit the exposure of our skin to these UV rays. With today’s lifestyle its always difficult to limit our exposure.Hence, whether indoor or outdoor one should wear a sunscreen throughout the day. Sunscreen should be considered as a basic protection to limit the worsening of skin damage.
What is SPF?
Every sunscreen has an SPF number and SPF is short for sun protection factor. It helps determine how well a sunscreen can protect the skin from UVB rays which causes sunburn, damages skin and can also contribute to skin cancer. The calculation takes place in this way: The ratio of the amount of UV radiation needed to cause reddening with the sunscreen to the amount of radiation needed to cause reddening without any sunscreen.
What SPF provides the highest protection against UV rays?
Based on the SPF we can understand the amount of UVB rays that can be blocked.
•SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
•SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
•SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
However we should also understand that these are only guiding numbers but how long the effect of a sunscreen lasts depends on the intensity of UVB rays, the exposure of the skin to these rays and the skin type. It is always advisable to choose a right SPF and re-apply based on the individual’s activity outdoor. For day to day activities the minimum recommendation for daily sun protection is SPF 30.
In addition to a sunscreen it is always advisable to take a few more precautions to limit the exposure of these UV rays. To name a few - staying in shade, walking with an umbrella ,avoid going out when the Sun’s UV rays are strongest which is usually between 12-4 PM and also avoiding products with excess harmful chemicals.
Why Ayurvedic cream with SPF is the best choice from UV radiation?
An ayurvedic cream is formulated with many well known herbs which are known to and believed to benefit our skin since ages even when used for a prolonged time. On the other hand though the chemical products help in sun protection but over usage may lead to skin damage over a period of time. Hence an ideal mix would be to use a Ayurvedic cream with SPF which would help in providing the necessary sun protection while nourishing the skin with the proven age old herbs.
Include an ayurvedic day cream that works like a moisturizer as well as an SPF 30 sunscreen in your daily skin care routine for a healthy, glowing skin.
