Hi and welcome to Moksha Living in Washington DC. So one of the most common questions that we get from people when they are beginning services with us is that they don't know whether they want coaching, therapy, or couples therapy and where they should begin. So I want to go over some things that might help you figure out where to start so you don't have to know what you're going to need in a year from now or six months from now.

You just really need to figure out where is the best place for you to get started. For a lot of people, beginning with psychotherapy is a good place to begin, if you've never done any type of mental health service before and you want to begin with just talking, getting some things out, having a sounding board, having someone to process that is not your friend or your family member to be able to give you an objective opinion and help you gain some perspective.

The idea here with therapy is that your therapist will take some time at the beginning of your work to review. Over the course of about three sessions, we'll review some things about your history, who you are, your family, what is ...
... going on with you, what your life has been prior to this point. The idea here is that knowing that information is helpful for you to be able to gain insight into the present challenges that you faced.

So one of the things that is a sign that people should begin with therapy, is knowing that you just want to talk about things. You just want to get things out and you want to get an objective perspective on what's going on with you and your life. Another reason to start with therapy is if you know or you suspect that you have some mental health challenges going on. And that doesn't mean that you have to have a diagnosis that you're aware of or it doesn't even mean that you will need to take medication.

In fact, most of our clients will never go on medication at all, especially if they're not taking it. So it does happen for a few people that we would recommend medication, but it's definitely not the majority of the people that we see here. So if you suspect that you have a mental health disorder that it is getting in the way of you being able to function in your life, such as not being able to get up, get out of bed, not being able to do things that are required for daily living, such as clean your house, maintaining your dish situation in the sink, not being able to get adequate rest, not having the energy to just prepare meals or get your basic meals throughout the day, not being able to perform or function at work, not feeling the energy to get out of the house, those are examples of depression.

Another way that people can be limited by a mental health disorder through anxiety, (everybody has anxiety, everybody has depression) but when it starts to influence your ability to function, that is a sign that the mental health imbalance is becoming a little bit more severe, that it needs a little bit more specialized attention from a licensed mental health professional, like a psychotherapist.

And so some of the things that might let you know that your anxiety is getting to that point where you might need to begin with therapy is if you're having overwhelming thoughts, if you're having panic attacks, you know that the heartbeat racing, the sweaty palms, feeling like you need to get out of a situation or totally avoiding situations altogether, feeling overwhelmed with thoughts to the extent that you are not sleeping, not eating, or like I said, avoiding situations is a really big part of it.

So these are some signs that you might have a mental health situation that needs to be addressed. And I would encourage you to begin with therapy. This should give you an idea of some of the things of where to begin. And also, I'll say the last part is that therapy is really about the process of exploring and understanding to gain insight into your life presently. That might include looking into the past or understanding something about the past. Coaching is really about the realm of the present and moving forward, so if you're interested in finding out more about what coaching is and how that might work for you, stay tuned and listen to the next video. All right. Hope to see you soon.
