Contactless Payment In 2021: What To Expect?
Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, consumer habits have changed. In recent weeks, due to isolation measures, there has been a decrease in the circulation of cash withdrawn from ATMs, as well as an increase in eCommerce through online purchases.
According to data, total purchases authorized in electronic stores from January to June 2020, 30% correspond to credit cards and 70% to debit cards.
Having changed their shopping habits for food and staples during the lockdown period, and with the opening of stores and restaurants indicating a gradual return to normalcy, consumers are now avoiding cash payments.
Today people already make greater use of credit cards and payment applications on their mobile phones, which minimizes the risk of contact. If allowed by the payment device technology, this also prevents the use of data where contact is required when entering the PIN.
Why contactless payment?
While the world has slowed down due to the covid-19 pandemic and lockdown imposition. The economic aspect ...
... is given no mercy too, with the risk of spread of virus due to contact has led to fewer transactions.
Hence, there has been a rapid shift towards the usage of contactless payment which seems to be emerging as the Ace of all payment modes in the upcoming era. According to a recent report the global smart card market is expected to exceed $65 billion by 2025.
Contactless Payment is the mode of payment where the payments can be done using tap to touch or scanning the debit card/credit card or smart card. It is using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and Near Field Communication (NFC) to do secure transactions. The transactions can be done without entering any Personal Identification Number (PIN) by using the details that are stored in a chip embedded in the card, the transactions can be done over proximity (4 to 10 centimeters).
What to expect in 2021?
Contactless payment options are constantly growing, biometric cards are among the safest trends. Faced with this new reality, fingerprint verification can be used as an alternative method of cardholder verification, instead of PIN or signature. As the card verifies the fingerprint on the sensor in less than a second, eliminating the need to manipulate the payment terminal.
This same solution offers digitized cards in a mobile wallet. Although users still have to use a payment device to interact with payment terminals, customer authentication is done on the same mobile phone. In most cases, using biometric data such as fingerprints. It is not even necessary to enter the PIN above the set limit.
Likewise, the adoption of contactless payments can also be promoted through wearable devices.
Wearable devices provide a benefit as they are directly accessible; It is not necessary to take them out of a pocket, so it makes it easier to use when shopping.
The era of contactless payment is beginning to get traction and attract a larger audience by providing a fast and secure mode of payment. To make it more real, the audience needs to be educated on how to go in hand with the digital revolution. The misconceptions must be cleared leading the users to experience the effortless and safer mode of payment.
