Because, in most places, for most of the year, the time window for healthy outdoor tanning is very narrow, it’s increasingly common for people who want to preserve their toasty tint to frequent indoor tanning salons. They can be found in any city and can be used any time of the year.

And like outdoor tanning, indoor tanning has its implications on skin health. Because tanning beds bombard the skin with UVA and UVB rays, the skin needs protection from several possible problems, which is why it’s best to be protected with indoor tanning bed lotion. In fact, there are several good reasons it’s necessary to use a proper lotion when indoor tanning.

Good Reasons to Use Tanning Lotions

Moisture: The uppermost epidermal (skin) layer may consist of dead skin cells, but the skin still needs to maintain moisture for elasticity, and to keep it from developing painful breaks and cracks with movements. Because tanning of any kind can easily cause skin dry-out, moisturizing is a must-do.

Every indoor tanning bed lotion contains a moisturizer, and there are several different kinds of additives that moisturize ...
... while tanning, many of them from natural sources, and as diverse as hemp oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter.

Lasting Tan: A tan of any kind will gradually fade without regular sessions. Indoor tanning bed lotions slow down this natural fading with various ingredients that keep a tan lasting longer. Indoor tanning lotions also act as tan accelerators, which help establish a deep and even tan quickly using natural additives, such as vitamins A, C, and E. These help to promote free blood flow, bringing oxygen to melanin cells, which are the source of the darker pigmentation.

Many indoor tanning bed lotions contain varying amounts of bronzers, the most common of which is DHA. These are additives that stimulate amino acids on the surface of the skin to increase melanin production.

Protection: Your skin is the body’s largest and most exposed organ, and it is prone to receiving damage from many sources that could easily cause burns or infections. When you do any form of tanning, there is always exposure to burn and dryness hazards due to the UV ray bombardment.

Because tanning beds operate by producing a constant flow of UVB and UVA rays (which provide a faster and more consistent tan than sunlight), indoor tanning bed lotions also contain a number of additives that protect the skin from direct exposure risks.

In spite of some common thought, tanning without a lotion will not give you a deeper and faster tan due to the lack of moisture the skin retains. Without protection, the moisture in the skin cannot sustain increased melanin production, and the tan will take longer.

Safety: Indoor tanning bed lotion is only appropriate when doing indoor bed tanning. Because it lacks sunscreen, it should never be used as an outdoor lotion because it will not protect the skin from solar UV rays.

Conversely, outdoor tanning lotions should never be used indoors, either. Indoor tanning bed lotions are formulated to keep contact with the acrylic on the tanning bed from becoming brittle, staining, or from forming a film that inhibits a healthy tan.

Choices, Choices...

Indoor tanning bed lotions are necessary if you’re looking to tan using the indoor route, and over and above the common benefits, the indoor tanning lotion market is full of diverse choices for all forms of skin types and shades, making it easy to find a custom fit for your tanning style.
