It is certainly a relief when you are not alone when it comes to hearing loss troubles.

For this very reason, along with hearing aids, there are also assistive hearing devices that augment the hearing experience and aid in making sounds clearer and more audible.

Have you heard of these latest technologies yet?

If not, you’re soon about to know everything about hearing devices and how they function. If you are fascinated by any of these, Hearing Aids’ Professionals will get you set up with them.

What are Assistive Listening Devices?

Classified as personal technologies, these devices perform a simple function. They help in magnifying sounds so that you have no difficulty in deciphering what is being spoken.

Assistive listening devices can be of many types. While some involve a microphone being held in the other’s hand, there are others that involve slightly more complex technology.

The underlying principle though is the same. Sound is amplified so that the hearing aid ...
... picks it up and transmits it to the ear.

What are the types of Assistive Hearing Devices?

Although there is a multitude of these devices that dominate the market, the three most common ones are as follows:

Hearing Loop

The hearing loop is found in settings such as conference rooms or theatre and works on the principle of electromagnetic radiation.
It operates as follows:

Sound source: The person speaking serves as the sound source.
Amplifier: The sound is amplified and converted into an electromagnetic signal.
Thin wire loop: The amplified sound is received by the wire loop and passes through it.
Receiver: The wire loop is most commonly located in the hearing aid device and this amplified sound is picked up by the person who has hearing loss.

FM system

Another of the assistive hearing devices in Australia is the FM system. This works on the principle of radio signals and in fact, is just like tuning in to a radio channel and listening to whatever is streaming on it.

Typically used in a classroom setting, the speaker speaks into the microphone and this sound is then captured by the transmitter.

The receiver (a person experiencing hearing loss) tunes in to that particular channel and then is able to listen to this amplified sound.

Microphones

This requires some effort from the person you are in conversation with. They are required to hold a microphone while speaking, and the amplified sound will be transmitted to your hearing aid.

This is especially useful while in public spaces, as it works to filter out background noise.

Infrared system

As the name suggests, the principle here is infrared light. The sound is received by the transmitter and then converted into infrared light. It is then transmitted to the receiver’s hearing aid.

This type of setting is usually used in courtrooms.

Remote controls

Instead of constantly having to adjust the frequencies on your hearing aid, you can do it easily with the remote control device. This enables you to switch channels or even adjust the volume while holding the device in your palm.

These assistive devices do seem to make life a whole lot simpler, don’t they?

The Benefits of using Assistive Learning Devices

Along with the magnified sound, there are numerous benefits of these assistive devices. To name a few:

One-to-one communication becomes more personalized. Especially in social and public situations, it adds a personal touch to the conversation and the background din is reduced.

In the case of the FM system, barriers do not obstruct the radio waves from making their way through.

The infrared transmission is excellent when you are listening to the television. It also comes in handy when there are confidential matters at hand, as the infrared signal is limited to the room and cannot get past barriers, such as walls.

Assistive hearing devices in Australia are tailor-made to suit your needs. Hearing loss can be bothersome and stressful. But getting the right assistive device need not be.
