1. Wire
 
The basic elements required to produce a wire mesh are the warp and weft wires. These wires are woven over and under each other, in a specific weaving pattern.
 
The warp wire runs across or runs vertically, creating the length and the weft wire runs horizontally, creating the width of the wire mesh.
 
The quality of the wire is crucial in weaving an error-free mesh, here is the list of few important terms associated:
a.) The Ultimate Tensile Strength: The UTS value of the wire helps to determine whether the wire is good enough to weave. Some wires are too soft which leads to extra elongation while some wires are too hard which leads to wire breakage and production loss.
 
b.) The Roundness of the Wire: The perfect cylindrical shape of the wire leads to a smooth surface and uniform aperture size. The smooth surface further helps in the user application causing an easy flow of raw material. c.) The Diameter of the Wire: The uniformity in the wire diameter leads to uniformity in the aperture size, which ultimately affects the user.
 
The variation in the diameter of the wire is a common phenomenon. This happens due to the quality of the mold from which the wire is extruded.
 
2. Mesh Count
 
The terms, "mesh" and "mesh count", both refer to the number of openings per linear inch. To determine mesh or mesh count, start from the center of one wire and count the number of openings to a point exactly one linear inch away.
 
For example, 8 mesh (or 8 x 8 mesh) specifies that in one linear inch, there are 8 openings. Likewise, 40 mesh (or 40 x 40 mesh) indicates that in one linear inch, there are 40 openings.
 
3. Aperture / Micron
 
It is the distance between two adjacent wires and it can be measured in mm or microns. Usually, a video measuring machine is used to determine the exact distance. If the weaving standard is practiced as per ASTM standards, then the values are pre-determined.
 
Aperture or Micron Rating of the wire mesh is very important to the end-user as he uses these meshes for filtration and sieving purposes to obtain a specific quality of outcome or product.
 
A wire mesh should be produced in such a way that the micron rating, is uniform through the width and length of the roll. It’s easy to identify the aperture variation in the coarse mesh (2 mesh to 50 mesh) but as the mesh gets finer it is difficult to identify the variation with the naked eye.
 
It’s convenient to weave a wire mesh, but it’s quite a task to produce uniform aperture size throughout the roll because it needs each and every smallest part of the weaving machine to work in sync so as the produce a top-notch product.
 
A wire mesh manufacturer should be identified in such a way that he maintains the quality standard and guarantees the uniformity of the micron rating throughout the roll.
 
4. The Wire Mesh Weaving Standard
In 1999, The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) had established the standards for the industrial weaving of the woven mesh. It is the most prevailing, accepted, and comprehensive standard for industrial weaving. It relates to any principal metal or metal alloy wire that is suitable for weaving.
 
5. Wire Mesh Material Grade
 
Wire mesh is an ancient product which has been used for filtration and sieving of different material since ages.
 
The specific demand for different applications led to weaving mesh with different raw materials.
 
Wire mesh can be woven using various ferrous and non-ferrous material grades like stainless steel grades, Brass, Copper, Monel,
 
Inconel, Phosphor Bronze, Aluminium, Titanium, etc. Besides, wire mesh can also be woven using synthetic materials like Polyester, Fiberglass, plastic polymer, etc.
 
For electrical applications, the user prefers copper or brass mesh. For highly acidic or alkaline product applications, the user prefers Nickel or Titanium mesh. For domestic applications such as insect screens, an Aluminium mesh is preferable.
