Medical Coding And Billing Certification
Five steps toward a medical coding & billing certification
Medical coders are highly trained professionals who report codes to medical records for insurance billing and for statistical analysis. Some offices may be willing to hire and train coders; however most hospitals and physician offices want their coders to be certified. In order to get the certification, coders must pass a tough examination. Here are a few steps that you need to know to get your certification:
Step one
First, find out which certification will meet your career goals. There are various medical coding certifications. The certification you go for will depend on which health-care setting you select. Outpatient medical coders work in surgery centers and physician offices. In the outpatient setting, there's a strong emphasis on correct CPT coding.
The standard accepted coding certification is AAPC's Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification. Inpatient or hospital coders also report CPT codes, however there's a stronger emphasis on ICD-9 diagnosis ...
... and procedure codes.
Step two
Join an association like AAPC. Such associations need membership prior to allowing any coder to sit for the CPC exam. Such organizations host local meetings offering tips on coding and passing the certification exam.
Step three
Submit an application to sit for the exam; you can get information on exam sites and dates on the AAPC website. See to it that your application is thorough and that all required materials are included. Each and every organization has different requirements; so see to it that you double check your application.
Step four
Study and practice for the exam. There are various books that offer case studies for coding practice. Prior to your exam date, code as many examples as possible.
Step five
Join a training camp that will equip you just right for your medical coding and billing certification examination.
