Can You Ride An Electric Motorcycle Without A Licence?

Introduction
With a continuously changing dynamic environment and several amendments made in the legislation, it becomes difficult to keep up with all the updates and knowledge. Most people know about the laws regarding standard vehicles; however, only a chunk of them is aware of electric vehicles' laws. It should be made very clear that all-electric motor-vehicles, including bikes and scooters, ranging from the cheapest electric motorcycle to the most expensive one, require a license to drive.
Problems regarding Electric Motorcycles
A grey area that exists concerning electric motorcycles is that there is no clear-cut classification of the same. The term is broad to include all-electric vehicles ranging from one, two, and three-wheeled electric vehicles. In common parlance, we often associate electric motorcycles with meaning either e-bikes or scooters. And this is where the problem arises.
An attempt was made back in 2002 by the U.S. Parliament to provide for electric bike classification. This classification helps us in differentiating an electric bike ...
... from an electric motorcycle.
Further, a license is mandatorily required to ride an electric motorcycle.
The main challenge while buying an electric motorcycle is that different countries have different laws and regulations regarding the use and licensing of an electric motorcycle. Therefore, consultations from the local Department of Motor Vehicles regarding the legality and licensing of electric motorcycles is recommended.
Type of License required to ride an Electric Motorcycle
A motorcycle license permits the rider to use and operate a two-wheeled motorcycle only and not any other vehicle type. There are two broad classes of motorcycle licenses:
1.Class M1 License:
This license allows one to ride any electric motorcycle with a horsepower of more than 150 CC, including electric scooters, electric mopeds (motorcycle with paddles), and electric cycles.
2.Class M2 License:
This license is more restrictive in its operation and only allows one to ride a moped or any motorized bicycle not exceeding the speed of 48 km/h or 30 mph. If one's motorized bicycle exceeds the speed of 30 mph, then a Class M1 license has to be taken.
Requirements to get a Driver's License
• Under 18 Years: Vision Test + Written Test+ Certificate of completing the motorcycle basic rider course + Driving Test
• Above 18 Years: Vision Test + Written Test+ Certificate of completion of the motorcycle basic rider course.
Which Electric Motorcycles do not require a license?
All-electric motorcycles - be it mopeds or scooters, require a license to operate. What doesn't require a license is an electric bike or an e-bike. All classes of e-bikes, including Class 3 e-bikes that reaches a maximum speed of 45 km/h or 28 mph, can operate without a license. E-bikes exceeding this speed limit would require a license.
There is a requirement of laws to classify the distinction between different types of electric motorcycles. There is also a need for a license for electric motorcycles' operation because more young riders are using them without having the required knowledge or expertise to operate them. Moreover, people shall refer to comfortable, affordable, and light-weighted scooters like XGT VP Smart Scooters to ensure a healthy riding experience.
