Soundproof doors and windows are pretty much in trend these days. Both office and house owners prefer them over regular doors and windows since they ensure better privacy and resist the disturbance caused by external noise. And with the overflowing population of the big cities, it is hard to carry on with any sort of work amidst the disruptive noises. It doesn’t matter what type of work one indulges in – be it household chores or office work, mental sanity is always essential to increase work focus and work efficiency.

Thus, they keep one secluded from all types of disturbing distractions and encourages better work ethic. Although they come in different types depending on their size and design, they can also be categorized based on the material they are made up of. The two major materials that go into their making are – Steel and Timber.

Timber

Pros

• They ...
... are less expensive than steel – Acoustic windows and doors made up of timber are pocket friendly and require low costing compared to the steel ones.

• They give an aesthetic touch to the interior –They enhance the beauty of the interior. They brighten the interior and make the mundane look interesting.

• Their natural element makes them flexible – Since timber is a natural product, it can be utilized as a compatible partner for any sort of furniture decoration.

• Beneficial for homeowners and small studio owners – Their low costing make them suitable for homeowners and small studio owners who need to uplift the visual appeal of their small-sized apartments or studios. Hence they are flexible for both commercial and non-commercial purpose.

Cons

• Their strength is not equivalent to steel – In terms of strength, they cannot beat steel. Therefore, their low costing hasn’t gained them popularity over steel. As a result, they are not recommended for high-budget business infrastructures.

• It cannot be teamed up with glass –Although timber can be used to make an acoustic door, acoustic windows made of timber are however not approved. Glasses cause hindrance to the efficiency of timber. Therefore, when teamed with glass they might not perform the functions that are expected out of them.

• Their acoustic performance is poorer than steel –Timber has an ‘acoustic isolation rating of Rw50dB’ which is lower to the acoustic isolation rating of steel that ranges between ‘Rw40dB to Rw63dB’. Thus, they do not resist the entrance of noise to the degree that steel does.

Steel

They provide security – Apart from resisting sound, they also provide high-level security to the rooms they keep enclosed. This feature gives them an anti-theft property and makes them suitable for places that require high-level security to ensure the protection of vital commodities.

• They are more durable compared to timber –They are good for the long run. They require less maintenance and are not ‘prone to shirking, cracking or warping’.

• They can be modified according to the interior – Since they come in a ‘painted finish’ and offer a wide range of colors to choose from they can be modified as per the interior. Therefore, there is no need to adjust the interior of the room to match it with a steel acoustic door or window. Their variation itself eases the worry.

• They have a high fire rating compared to timber –They are capable of enduring high temperatures for a longer duration compared to timber. Therefore they have a higher fire rating I.e 240 minutes compared to timber I.e. 60 minutes.

• They can also match their timber counterparts –If someone wishes to install both steel and timber soundproof doors and windows, steel can easily blend in with their timber counterparts. Although the total costing might be expensive, it will nonetheless ensure complete satisfaction to the customer who desires to possess both.

Cons

• They are expensive – They are way more expensive than timber and hence aren’t pocket friendly. They are perfect for big-budget business or industries or academic institutions and not small scale businesses.

Thus, steel is always a better material than timber when it comes to choosing acoustic doors and windows. However, this must not be forgotten that choosing steel over timber requires a thorough consideration of other factors too. For example, if the budget is tight, one should not go for steel. Also for small-sized apartments or chambers where timber can do the needful, there is no need to be inclined towards a high-cost material. Unless one gets these facts crosschecked, one should not rush into concluding. Doors and windows form an essential part of the infrastructure, be it a house or an office, therefore they should be chosen wisely after thorough judgement over a considerable amount of time. One can surf the internet for important details about them and know the difference between them, but the hiring process should be done offline.
