Patty Jenkins’ 2020 film Wonder Woman 1984 (stylized as WW84) is based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman. It stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. The movie was released on 16 December 2020 in the United Kingdom and on 25 December 2020 in the United States. Wonder Woman 1984 has collected $118.5 million against a budget of $200 million. The movie is also available as a premium video on demand on HBO Max.

The theatres have suffered a lot due to the pandemic, and most of them were closed until the last few months. Many studios have postponed the release date of big-budget movies to 2021. Since the vaccine got approval, there is a little ray of hope that the situation will get better at the end of the year.

According to a few critics, the movie is “overindulgent and cliche.” On Metacritic, it scored 60 out of 100 based on 57 critics. The critic of The New York Times, Manohla Dargis, wrote that “Patty Jenkins is behind the camera again, but this time without the confidence.”

The movie’s collection is still slowly going up, but it considerably dropped than the first weekend’s gross. According to The Wrap report, the collection of the DC sequel has fallen by 67%. This weekend Wonder Woman 1984 collected $15.6 million worldwide while $5.5 million in Canada and the United States. Its domestic total is $28.5 million, with a gross of $118.5 million worldwide.

The decrease in the amount of the box office collection of the film is not that surprising. COVID-19 is still a huge concern with the increase in the number of cases in a few countries. The new mutated strain of coronavirus has encouraged people to avoid public areas. Additionally, the word of mouth of Wonder Wonder 1984 has grown negative, and many fans feel that it has not surpassed the original film.

The idea of releasing the movie as a video on demand was a smart move, and the project’s performance was likely to improve for the HBO Max collection. Warner Bros. studio has already announced its plans for the sequel of the film Wonder Woman 3. It will be interesting to see what the studio has planned for the franchise.
