There are many parts of our vehicle that needs replacement with time. It can be difficult for the user to take their car to the nearest car garage for every single repair or replacement. It is important to know a few tricks to replace the simple parts of your vehicle yourself. It might seem difficult at first, but in reality, they are not that complicated and they also save a lot of your money.
If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, you can look up for the nearest car garages in reading. However, replacing a thermostat yourself would cost you way less than the car thermostat replacement cost in the UK.
What is thermostat housing used for?
The thermostat housing is used as a cooling agent in the internal combustion engine. It keeps the engine closer to its suitable operating temperature by regulating the flow of the coolant to an air-cooled radiator. It consists of a chamber that holds wax in it. The wax melts and expands according to the temperature of the engine. When the engine becomes too hot and the wax ...
... melts, a valve is opened by the chamber so the excess heat can get out. The thermostat also opens or closes its mouth according to the temperature, hence circulating the coolant to the radiator to keep the engine temperature in the optimum range.
Why you should replace your housing thermostat
The thermostat plays an important role in accelerating the engine warm-up. They hold the coolant until the engine reaches a predetermined temperature. A damaged or worn out housing can cause the car to overheat and damage other parts of the engine. It can also cause a coolant leak onto your engine which will result in heat dissipation.
Things that are required
•A clean rag
•Gasket and gasket sealant
•Screwdrivers
•Socket wrench (small)
•New thermostat
•Adjustable wrench (small)
•A small scraper
•A drip pan or 9 L bucket
Steps to replace your thermostat
1.Put your car on flat and smooth ground and wait for the engine to cool down
2.Drain the coolant system once the engine has cooled down
3.Use a screwdriver to remove the radiator hose connected with the thermostat by pulling the clamp off.
4.Loosen the radiator hose from the housing by twisting it. Use a wrench to take off the bolts in the housing. Once it is detached, remove the thermostat and put the rag in the opening of the thermostat to prevent any dirt or debris from entering.
5.You need to install the new thermostat in a way that the copper heat sensor is facing the engine. It won’t work if it is placed upside down.
6.Remove any accessible corrosion from the water jacket and clean the rims of the housing. Carefully remove the old gasket from the thermostat with the help of a scraper.
7.Place the new gasket and tighten the thermostat. Put all the bolts back in place.
8.Attach all the hoses back, which were removed previously, and add the coolant back into the vehicle as well.
9.After everything is fixed, run the engine to its optimum operating temperature.
10.Check the car for any leaks or strange things. It might not happen when the car is stationary. Take your car for a drive and see if it runs properly or not.
11.If the temperature needle stays at normal even when the car is driven at a full operating temperature, then it means you have solved the conflict.
The Internet has made it a lot easier to replace anything yourself. Like repairing or replacing an abs pump, you can buy a repair kit and learn to repair it from the guides or videos present online.
