Gujarat is one of the most industrial states in the country. However, the state has been excelling in agriculture and allied activities as well. The state has been performing very well in the food processing industry; however, there still exists immense untapped potential in the sector in the state.
The Government of Gujarat is taking a lot of measures to promote the food processing industry in the state. Gujarat has a ‘Comprehensive Agro Business Policy’ that is already in place for the food processing industry. The sectors eligible for the policy include fruits and vegetable processing, cereals and other consumer food products, oil seeds products, rice and flour milling, pulse processing, honey and bee keeping, milk products, meat, poultry, fishery, non-edible agriculture produce, food flavours, colours, spices, coconut, mushrooms, agri-waste processing units and infrastructure projects like cold storages, food irradiation processing plants, pack houses, reefer vans, etc.

• 25-40% subsidy on the transport
• 7.5% interest subsidy for setting up, expansion and diversification of food processing industries for five years
• 50% reimbursement on stamp duty /registration fee paid on sale/lease/transfer of land
• 100% reimbursement on stamp duty/registration fee for setting up agro infrastructure projects
• 100% reimbursement on electricity duty for five years
• Assistance to R&D institutions for equipment and machinery or modernization of labs or setting up of new labs. Assistance for contracts/approved research work from SME industrial enterprise to recognized R&D institute/technical colleges approved by AICTE
The state government also established world-class infrastructure to facilitate the food processing activities in the state. Gujarat has 2 mega food parks, 20 agri-export zones and 207 warehouses. The state also has 560 cold storage and fish processing units with a capacity of 20,30,873 MT.
Despite the government’s support, the food processing industry is yet to realize its true potential. The food processing industry in the state is dominated by small and medium size industries. There are around 30,000 unorganized food processing industries in Maharashtra. These small and medium scale industries present in the unorganized sector face numerous challenges owing to lack of adequate financial resources and access to domain experts.
