The Choice Between Two Candidates

We are given the choice between two candidates; Ann Green from the Good Earth Coalition and Frank Braun from the Clearview town council. The present argument in favor of the one and against the other is unreasonable for a number of reasons.

First, it is unreasonable to hold Frank Braun responsible for what all the current members of the Clearview town council have failed to do. In fact, any such failure should first be attributed to the current mayor, next to the council, and still next to its individual members. It's true that sometimes we may have to find out the responsibility of a certain member Frank Braun, for instance. But, before we start reasoning about such responsibility , we should ask, among many relevant questions, this essential one ? Is Frank Braun an ordinary member of the council, or chairmen of a committee comprising a group of members hi charge of environmental protection? If the first is true (most likely it is), he might be in no position to make things better even if he wanted to. If the second is true (most likely it isn't), the argument should include a statement about it.

Second, it is ...
... unreasonable, not to mention unfair, to attribute only disasters (increased respiratory illnesses, for instance) to increased factories that Frank Braun' town council is now held responsible for. To begin with, no one can be entirely sure that these problems are caused only by increased factories. Respiratory illnesses, for instance, were existing before we had factories at all. And these diseases might be increasing before there were increased factories. And let's not forget that, while more factories can cause worse air pollution, they also mean increased job opportunities and the prosperity of the town in general. Still, you never can say that increased factories necessarily increase air pollution. After so many years' environmental effort, we have come to have clean factories that are simply pollution-free. Haven't we had some of such factories recently built in own town?

Third, it is unreasonable to call us to "vote for Ann Green" without giving us specific, concrete reasons. It is not enough to say that she is a member of the "Good Earth Coalition," because it is not that every organization does what its name implies; tell us what Good Earth Coalition has been doing to make our earth better. Further, even if Good Earth Coalition has been doing good, we need to know what role its member Ann Green has been playing.

Finally, let's not forget that we are electing a mayor. Then you find it both unreasonable and silly to believe that a mayor's job is to mind the Earth only. On the contrary, as mayor, he or she has a far larger duty to perform , and needs a far larger capacity for such duty. This means that, even if Ann Green is more capable of and more enthusiastic about protecting our environment, and Frank Braun is less so, we still have to ask: What else is Ann Green interested in? Is she qualified for that larger duty? Does she possess that larger capacity?

This means that, if we elect Ann Green, it is likely that the many "environmental problems" in Clearview may be solved, but we are far from being certain that the many other problems can get solved along with them. And we are not at all sure if the many "tasks" , environmental, financial, educational, etc. , will be effectively handled.
