A century ago, for instance, it was a matter of law in many societies that the young behave properly to their elders and parents. Words and deeds of disrespect to one's parents were handled in a court of law, and sons and daughters who had set the worst examples were severely punished. In those times, disloyalty to one's parents was held as the second biggest crime, next only to disloyalty to one's country and the king. As a result, even an illiterate peasant knew that it was his duty to allow his father and mother to stop work-ing when they were too old to work, let them live with him, support them financially, and serve them faithfully until their death.
