Moral Behavior Used To Be Legislated
I don't think what is stated in the above is true. (http://www.itscopied.com/)I believe it is not that moral behavior cannot be legislated so that the many related problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system; it is that modern people do not choose to do so.One such evidence is that moral behavior used to be legislated, and related problems be effectively solved by laws and the legal system. A century ago, for instance, it was a matter of law in many societies that the young behave properly to their elders and parents. Words and deeds of disrespect to one's parents were handled in a court of law, and sons and daughters who had set the worst examples were severely punished. In those times, disloyalty to one's parents was held as the second biggest crime, next only to disloyalty to one's country and the king. As a result, even an illiterate peasant knew that it was his duty to allow his father and mother to stop work-ing when they were too old to work, let them live with him, support them financially, and serve them faithfully until their death. Parents-abandoning? No, it was something ...
... unheard-of.In some societies, there was a time when the law was made and exercised by the priests. And they handled in the church matters ranging from state affairs to "moral behavior" of individuals. And they were in the position to pass judgments. There, related problems and issues were solved even more mercilessly. In modern times, however, as a result of the struggle for "freedom," we are allowed to be morally free in many cases. For example, nowadays in many societies it is unlawful to neglect or abandon one's children. But, when these children grow up, they are free to abandon their parents, giving them no money when they are unable to work, or even driving them out of the house. And this practice has been so widespread that today we have parents-abandoning as a big human right problem. And, since so many people have been practicing this without being duly, properly punished, society is going to give up after giving this lamentation: Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because moral behavior cannot be legislated. But things could have been different if we had made a different choice. Namely, if we had chosen to free slaves from the slave owner, to free peasants from the landlord and the king, to free workers from the capitalist — in short, if we had done all these but had continued to have such "moral behavior" as children's behavior to their parents legislated in laws, as we had continued to legislate our duties to the state — we would never have found that we are so incapable of dealing with the "many problems of modern society" by laws and the legal sys-tem.When we pursue the matter further, we get a bigger shock; we find that, in modern times, laws and the legal system have been used carefully, effectively, and chiefly to protect the "life" of a part of the society — the government and what are related to it — rather than the "health" of the entire society. Hence that lamentation. (http://www.designer-cheap.com/)
