Selecting The Right Keywords For Seo
The backbone of every SEO campaign is the keywords upon which it is based. Keywords are nothing more than the search terms / phrases that users input when looking for your products or services on your website. These words are used by webmasters to develop content that will attract search engine spiders and are used when implementing pay per click campaigns. Choosing the best keywords for your business is critical if you have any hopes of becoming successful online.
The logical question is how to select the right keywords for SEO. It can seem like a daunting task, finding unique and relevant keywords that will make your site stand out from the pack. There are several techniques that, when used correctly, can ensure you will select the best keywords possible.
The first step is to put yourself in the position of your potential customer. Spend a few minutes considering how they are likely to find you. What word or phrase will they type into a search engine? Your next step should be a stop at Google’s keyword tool. This handy little tool allows you to enter one of your possible keywords and suggests similar words while providing data on how popular a particular search is. You must also carefully consider how many keywords to work with. Having too many keywords makes for a difficult-to-manage campaign while too few will make your campaign less effective. One idea is to concentrate on two to three keywords for each page of your website. By doing this you will naturally manage you keyword density, or the percentage of keywords versus other content, per page. In addition, don’t worry if you have a large keyword list. You will need to prioritize the list based on the data that you uncover during the research. For instance, you may just want to target the top 20 keywords / phrases based on search volume. There are many ways to prioritize but it must be done so that you can focus and give the proper attention to each one.
One final tool available to you is your competitor’s websites. Take a careful look at the websites of your main competition. Analyze the site to determine what keywords they are using. You may be able to capitalize on this information by either removing keywords from your list that are generic or by including words for a head to head battle. You can use tools such as “Spyfu†or “Wordtracker†for this research.
Your last step should be a state of constant tweaking. Choose a qualified team of SEO consultants to help you manage, and continuously adapt your list of keywords, and the way they are used on your pages, article content, blog posts, press releases et al.
Developing a list of keywords will take time and research, but the many uses of keywords makes it well worth it. For instance, be sure to carefully consider which keywords to use for PPC advertisements. You may have to change your choices several times before hitting on the best combination. Always remember that keywords are driven by the people who are using the internet, so as fads, taste and times change, you will need to respond to this by changing your keywords as well. Your keyword list should be the first step in your marketing plan, and always carefully prepared as well as continually researched.
