The Coronavirus outbreak has forced the people all across the world to pay attention to their health. Even the World Health Organisation has stated that a robust immune system is the best shot humanity has, against this deadly pandemic, at least until the vaccine is discovered for it!

To take the best approach towards a robust immune system, we must first understand that we are all born with an immune system, a.k.a body's natural mechanism to fight diseases. However, the overuse of antibiotics and other medicines has rendered us with a weaker defensive mechanism.

But the good news is that the damage is not permanent, and we can still boost the immunity system and regain what was given to us by Mother Nature! Exercise, yoga, and a stress free lifestyle can prove to be of immense help in strengthening the immune system.

Other than that, some foods and herbs rich in antioxidants and vitamins can too help us boost the Immune system.

Infact Ayurveda has been using these herbs and lifestyle interventions for ages to fight diseases and build a robust natural defense mechanism.

According to recent research ...
... there are around 75-100 species of herbs and flowers worldwide, proven to have medicinal values. These herbs have been used as a preventive measure to fight diseases and infections, especially in the Indian Ayurvedic system and Chinese traditional medicinal system.

Some herbs can also increase the immunity ingredient and therefore are known as immunomodulatory herbs.

Three herbs to boost the immune system

Amla

Rich in Vitamin C, Amla is a powerhouse of nutrients. Amla, also known as Indian Gooseberry, effectively fights and prevents some common diseases and infections. It not only boosts immunity but also enhances metabolism. Amla is rich in antioxidants and can reverse the harm caused by free radicals. It is the best herb for skin and hair problems. You can either consume fresh Amla directly or use Ayurvedic products that are prepared with Amla as the active ingredient such as Amla Murabba. It helps to retain both taste and health and for the best results it is advised to take it with Milk every morning.

There is no substitute for Amla when it comes to its miraculous properties to treat respiratory tract problems. It not only flushes out the toxins from the body but also detoxifies the liver and improves its functioning. Amla reduces cholesterol levels, manages diabetes, and reduces the risk of heart diseases.

Ashwagandha is one more herb used as an alternative for Allopathic medicine to treat various health issues. It is called the king of herbs in the Ayurvedic system. Scientific research shows that the roots, bark, seeds, and leaves of the Ashwagandha tree can boost immunity. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties and fights cancer. Ashwagandha has been extensively used to lower blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and inflammation in the body. It is best known for its ability to reduce stress, anxiety, and overcome depression.
Ashwagandha leaves and seeds can be consumed directly first thing in the morning. Ayurvedic products also offer all the benefits of this medicinal herb.
Consuming Ashwagandha regularly can also increase testosterone levels in men. Infact, it is used in Ayurveda to treat male infertility and improve sperm count in men.

Giloy

Giloy is called Amrita, which translates to 'the root of immortality,' and there is a reason behind this. When we try to count its medicinal properties, we almost run out of numbers. It has been used in Ayurveda for centuries to boost immunity. Giloy is one of those rare herbs that are effective in several diseases ranging from fever to stress and anxiety. It is useful in malaria, dengue, chronic fever, digestive problems, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, high blood sugar, and whatnot.
One of the many reasons that it has a special place in the Ayurveda is that it is highly effective in stress and depression. It has anti-aging properties and can treat inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis. The last but not the least reason that it is valued is that it is a sure shot remedy for respiratory tract diseases, making it more valuable in the COVID times. There are numerous Ayurvedic and Herbal products online that have Giloy as an active ingredient and can be consumed to boost immunity.

Properties: - Anti-inflammatory, Anti-gout, Anti-stress, Antioxidant, Immunomodulator, Analgesic, Anti-cancer, Antacid, Detoxifier, Antipruritics.

Not only herbs, but you can boost the immune system with food too! In India, we use many ingredients during cooking, which are proven to improve immunity and fight diseases. Some of these ingredients are garlic, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, tulsi, fenugreek seeds, and holy basil.

A strong immunity has become the need of the hour, and you can easily achieve it by using herbs and changing your lifestyle. Remember, there is no magical pill that can guarantee a disease-free life overnight. It is a lifelong process, and we have to make a promise ourselves to improve it day by day, one step at a time.
