Although widely considered hip hop as a synonym for rap music, hip hop referred to a complex culture comprising four elements: deejaying, rappings, graffiti painting, and B-boying. The hip hop culture originated in the predominantly African American economically depressed South Bronx section of New York. The hip hop genre has unfolded in fascinating ways since the '70s; here's an introduction to some of the many vibrant hip hop styles that have developed since then.

Backpack

The Backpack form of hip hop was introduced in the '90s, which rejected rap's commercialization and the more polished, less thought-provoking styles that achieved tremendous mainstream success. The term backpack refers to a cliché of the fans wearing a backpack filled with college books, rhyme pads, spray paint, or vinyl. Rawkus was one of the favorite labels. The classic albums from Mos Def and Company Flow's likes were ultimate hip hops before sinning selling themselves to Interscope.

Boom Bap

The hip hop style, Boom bap, refers to a heavy kick drum "boom" followed by the crisp "bap" of a snare, usually with a moderate tempo ...
... and mixed so high that it isn't possible to listen without bobbing your head. Earlier you could reasonably claim all hip-hop music was boom-bap. The term didn't enter into general circulation; however, the sound describes the heart of hip-hop from the earliest breakbeats through sampl innovations of Marley Marl to the Golden era of New York rap music.

Cloud Rap

The term originated in 2010, followed by more airy-sounding tracks of self-proclaimed. The 'Based God' Lil B, cloud rap became the pigeonhole choice for anyone looking to describe a whole wave of artists, who favored abstract, atmospheric soundscapes for heavily medicated bedroom with hip-hop priority as a butt-shaking percussion.

Conscious hip hop

The conscious hip hop refers to any rap considered woke by the standards of its time from Melle Mel's vision of urban poverty on Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's The Message to J Cole's musings on addiction in KOD. Mostly the rappers in conscious hip hops focus on raising socio-political awareness. Renowned artists are as many activists as they are musicians.

Crunk

The music flourished in the '90s with nothing much more than an odd bit of dirty slang, meaning to get excited. Although it popped up now and then on all sorts of records, Lil' Jon and The Eastside Boyz virtually owned the word always with the release of their debut album- Get Crunk Who You Wit. From that point, crunk means heavy but often mid-tempo proto-trap club beats with a menacing lean.

Regardless of hip hop’s internal struggles, the music’s global impact constantly continued to expand.
