Silica gel has many advantageous properties that make it an effective desiccant to ward off rust, corrosion, and moisture creep, the catalyst for rust.

The advantageous characteristics of silica gels include:

Fast and efficient absorption. Silica gel will absorb up to one-third of its weight in moisture vapour. This absorption efficiency makes it 35% higher than other desiccants such as clay and charcoal. This makes silica gel the preferred choice where efficiency and weight absorption are essential concerns.

Silica gels have an almost indefinite shelf life if stored in airtight conditions.

Desiccants save money because they can be reused again by regeneration. They can either be gently heated or placed under the sun’s heat for a few hours to remove the absorbed moisture and leave it ready for reuse.

Silica gel is an inert material. It does not attack or corrode other materials, whether metal, plastics, etc. And its only enemies are strong alkalis and hydrofluoric acid, of which there is no reason for desiccants to be placed in these in the first place.

Desiccants are non-toxic and ...
... non-flammable, making them safe to use by workers and have no dangerous flashpoint whatsoever.

Silica gel is convenient and most effective when packed in a breathable sachet or bag (such as the silica gel products from the Daywalk range of silica gels and breathers). These sachets and bags can be available in different sizes or placed in breathers for a wide range of applications.

Silica gels have coloured gel indicators that change colour when the desiccant has fully absorbed moisture. (Daywalk silica gels are orange and turn green when full of moisture)

A brief description of silica gel
Silica gels are an amorphous form of silicon dioxide that is synthetically produced in the form of hard irregular granules that have the appearance of crystals. It has a microporous structure of interlocking cavities that gives it a high absorption area characteristic. It is this characteristic that makes silica gel a high capacity desiccant. Water molecules adhere to the silica gels because the gel exhibits a lower vapour pressure than the surrounding air. When the equilibrium of equal pressure occurs with the gels, no more absorption occurs.

The beauty of silica gels is that it causes no chemical reaction, no by-products, and causes no side effects. Even when saturated with moisture, its shape and appearance remain dry and unchanged.

Daywalk Silica Gels and Breathers
From the time it was Omni-tuff, Daywalk still manufactures the same high-quality silica gel products and breathers.

Generally used as drying agents for packaging and protecting shipped goods against moisture and corrosion.

YDB Range of Breathers with different sized Gel Capacity
This range of breathers has various size options with options for gel capacity, depending on the application it will be used for.

Disposable Breather 1kg Capacity
For some client’s special applications, this new breather has high quality and is still cost-effective. It eliminates the use of special adaptors that can be expensive.

eGel Silica Gel Pails – 5kg, 12.5kg, 25kg
