Differences And Similarities Of Cocoa And Coffee
Coffee and chocolate are most compared – as it is loved equally for its flavour which tastes extremely alike. So let’s check some of the differences and similarities of coffee and cocoa.
Coffee and Cocoa are from two different plants.
Cocoa comes from the ‘fruit of gods’, Theobroma cacao. It is an evergreen tree with flowers and fruits that grows directly on its trunk. Depending on species the size of the fruit (also called as a pod) differ. Each pod contains 20-60 cocoa beans that are surrounded with sugary fragrant pulp. To produce 450 grams of cocoa beans close to about 7-14 pods are required.
And coffee beans come from coffee cherries. Two beans are produced per cherry.
Cocoa tends to have a bitter and intense taste than the coffee, which is earthier. The darker roasted coffee beans could be more bitter. The level of roasting determines the taste of coffee to be bland or stronger. Hence, darker the coffee, more bitter would be its taste. Coffee is perceived to have a chocolaty or burnt acidic taste. Chocolate is made by mixing a lot of sugar and milk to cocoa powder.
Coffee beans ...
... contain close to zero calories, and cocoa beans are calorie-rich. Hence it is said that coffee does not make you gain weight or result in the intake of an excessive amount of calories. The increase in calories in the coffee-based drinks is due to the syrups, milk and sugary content that is added to it. Cocoa beans are naturally high in calorie content and are used to make chocolate.
Cocoa beans have a higher amount of antioxidants than that of coffee beans. Coffee is said to have more pronounced antioxidant activity when taken in as beverages. Coffee is a powerful stimulant that boosts antioxidant properties, and coca contains lesser amount of caffeine. Cocoa is also a powerful antioxidant packed with procyanidins and flavonoids.
Coffee, when grounded into smaller pieces, has a similar texture as the cocoa powder, the powder-like texture. The finely ground coffee used for espresso resembles cocoa powder. The finer ground coffee offers a rich flavour, but we cannot make chocolate with it.
Though there are similar undertones between cocoa powder and coffee powder, the major differences in flavour are there.
Mocha is a great blend between the coffee and chocolate, and the two go very well together. The bitter earthy tone of chocolate is what makes it rich, and cocoa is best with its warm tones. The taste varies to each person from others, and your perfect blend may not be the right choice for others. But there are many among us who like to blend strong coffee with cocoa powder and some milk added to it. You may find it under different names such as mochaccino, Caffe mocha or mocha latte and its variations – all of it is coffee with hot chocolate. You can change the ratio of the components to make one that tastes best for you.
To conclude, among the difference and similarities between the coffee and chocolate, the coffee lovers around the world love to experiment the various combination of coffee and cocoa; and it makes the best gift for your coffee-loving friends.
