Not that the true value of a civilization is equally found in its artistic creations and scientific accomplishments. There was a time when science was good and useful, and scientific accomplishments brought only benefits. They were discoveries of natural substances, such as minerals of coal and iron, usable and useful to human life. They contributed to the understanding of diseases so that the humans could live healthier and longer lives. They helped the humans, more importantly, become abler in that positive, healthful, and noble endeavor to produce more and more commodities, such as larger quantities of food to kill hunger, and clothes that first caused the hu-mans to feel warmer and later to appear better-looking. They helped, in short, increase human happiness.

Then there was a turn when science started to be ill-used and scientific accomplishments started to represent means of doing larger evils. Among these, accomplishments achieved in making weapons were the worst. For many centuries the humans were satisfied with the spear and shield as means of killing. With such, the killer would kill at the risk of his own life, and therefore there was in those ages killing of tens or hundreds of human beings each time. Ever since the discovery of the usefulness of explosives, and of the scientific application of them to the many killing purposes, means of killing have been increasing so dramatically that after a mere one hundred years killing is nowadays a thousand times more effective than a century ago. Thus, while science is the mother of these scientific accomplishments, the latter is in turn the mother of death on a large scale.

With these, the act of killing can be performed by some humans as if they were cutting down a branch in a public garden; although illegal, it is at a small cost, and causes little trouble. And this convenience has helped bring up humans that are more inhuman than their primitive ancestors fifty thousand years ago.

These inhuman beings are dangerous not because they are dangerous themselves, but because they cause a bitter disappointment in millions of the human about the human. Namely, many of them have come to ask; Are we better or worse beings after the process of civilization has been going on for several thousand years?

What about accomplishments attainted in the art? It is truly surprising that, while science and art have both been on their way to being modernized in the course of civilization, they have played entirely different roles: while scientific accomplishments helped the human beings become more hateful, destructive, and deadly to one another, artistic creations have functioned to cause the humans to appear and be more alike. This is evidenced by dances originating in one race and extending to many races within a few years, by literary works appreciated by all the nations, and by the same piece of music echoed in every corner all over the world. In the course of causing the humans to enjoy the same thing, artistic creations have played the magic role in causing the humans to come closer to and have a greater love for one another, a great instance of having the humans increasingly civilized.

With that comfort our resentment about scientific accomplishments is somewhat counterbalanced. And we know that, largely thanks to art and artistic creations, this civilization of ours has arrived at, after all, something that is truly valuable; a stage when the humans have got onto the road to being better, kinder, and more loving to one another.
