Is this your first time you are hearing about the Australian pineapplefish? The pineapplefish is a native species of coastal waters of Queensland, New South Wales, and Western Australia. It is the only member of its genus. It belongs to the family Monocentridae. It is also known as the knightfish or the coat-of-mail fish as it has armor-like scales all over its body. You can see the fish picture given and find it yourself.

The pineapple fish is named so because of its resemblance to the pineapple fruit. The scientific name of the pineapplefish is Cleidopus gloriamaris. They are really easily found because of their yellow scales, which are outlined in black color as you can see in the fish picture. These scales are very hard and act like armor and protect the fish from predators like large reed sharks and octopuses.

Though the pineapplefish looks really tiny in the fish picture, they can grow up to a maximum length of about 25cm and a weight of up to 2.3 kg (5 lbs). An interesting fact of these fish is that they have the ability to glow at night. The glowing appearance occurs due to a small organ on either side ...
... of their lower jaws which produces a greenish glow. They use their appearance at night to attract tiny microscopic prey to feed on them. The pineapplefish in the fish picture looks quite similar to the Japanese Pineapplefish, which can also be found in the waters of Australia.

The pineapplefish is a very popular species of fish that people look at while scuba diving. But clicking the fish picture can be hard, as they tend to hide under the rocks or inside the caves. This fish can be a great fish to keep with other fish species in an aquarium. They can live up to 10 years in a private aquarium.
