While running errands is always a hassle, doing the job with your kids in tow can be double the trouble. Running errands is very different when kids are involved and can prove to be a bit of a challenge for parents. Getting them ready to leave the house, managing distractions in the store, monitoring their every move so that they don’t cause trouble – it can get overwhelming.

Parenting requires you to juggle a lot of tasks at once, which is why you’re bound to pick up the art of multitasking eventually. Indeed, being a parent means finding ways to incorporate childcare into your daily routine.

Despite the situation of the world right now, there are bound to be times when you need to string your kids along with you to run an errand rather than leaving them at home by themselves.

Because, let’s face it – it’s a dilemma trying to choose between leaving the kids at home or with the neighbours or taking them with you because that way, you’ll be able to keep an eye on them.

All this can certainly be stressful, ...
... but we’ve got you covered! Next time you’re running errands, try these tips to make the experience more fun for your child and less stressful for you!

Work Around Their Schedule

We, as adults, are always at our best when we’re well-fed and well-rested, so why should it be any different with children? Running Errands will go a lot more smoothly if your kids are fed and rested, so go after they have eaten or after they wake up in the morning or after their naptime, when they’ll be energized.

While you’re at it, work around your schedule as well. Many parents have the maximum energy in the mornings. That’s also the time of the day when stores are less crowded and queues are shorter, so you won’t get stressed out trying to deal with the kids.

Make Errands Educational

You can make grocery shopping educational. For example, an easy math lesson – if you’re buying fruits, let your little ones count each fruit as they put it in the cart or ask them questions like ‘we need 5 oranges, and 3 are in the bag, so how many more do we pick out?’ Get creative with the kids and you’ll end up making your errands more fun for both of you!

Give the Kids a Job

Children love to help out with things, so why not give them simple jobs? For instance, if you have older kids, they can help you out by calling out the item you need from the grocery list while you add them to the cart or just simply ask them to help you look for an item that you need. By doing this, they’ll feel involved and also enjoy playing a part in helping you out with you task.

Bring Distractions

Taking trips to the drycleaners or the bank can be boring for a child. There’s absolutely nothing for them to do. In such a situation, it’s important that you come prepared. Carry a toy or an activity that your child likes. For instance, their favourite teddy bear or doll or even their colouring book and crayons. Even if it’s just a blank paper and pen, give it to them and they can easily utilize all that waiting time by getting creative.

Take a Break with the Kids

Let’s be honest – errands are dull and it’s no surprise that children get bored so easily. Therefore, it is important to take small, fun breaks in between your tasks when you’re with your kids. For instance, once you’ve finished your grocery virtual shopping, take your kids for an ice cream or to a nearby park for 15 minutes – you can relax and get some fresh air while they enjoy the swings. A nice treat will especially come in handy once you’ve completed all your tasks for the day. End your day by treating yourself and the kids to something they like.

Remember, running errands doesn’t always have to be stressful with the kids. They love to be with you and giving them small jobs will not only make them feel involved in ‘adult’ things, it will also give you a chance to bond with them.
