Types Of Rugs Available In The Market
There is an innumerable range of rugs available both in shops and online and one can have a stressful time in selecting the kind that would be most apt for one’s home.
Rugs come in varied fabrics in different patterns and colours. There are many brands available like Sanderson Green rugs from where you can buy a rug of the desired fabric. The most popular ones being:
Wool which is a natural fibre available as both machine-made and handwoven, knotted, hand-loomed or hand-tufted.
Next, we have the cotton rugs which are available in the form of dhurries and kilims.
Sisal, Jute and SeaGrass are best for sunny areas and a chic bohemian or mid-century modern vibe.
Leather, hide and sheepskin rugs are a unique touch to give to small spaces.
Silk rugs are another quite favourable option if budget is no issue to add a luxuriant and illustrious aura to a room. They are available in 100% silk or silk blend.
Faux Fur/ Faux Hide rugs are also a great option to choose as a statement piece. These are available in acrylic and synthetic blends and are usually power woven.
Microfiber/Polyester ...
... rugs are also synthetic and are either 100% polyester or a mixture of polyester and other synthetic fibres. Mostly they are machine woven and give an expensive feel.
Polypropylene Rug is another somewhat favourable choice. These are usually thinner in texture and made from materials like nylon, viscose, polypropylene and others and have evolved to have the properties of natural fibres as much as is possible.
The pros and cons of a rug and its fabric:
We now know that the fabrics in which a rug is made available are varied and have a basic knowledge of how they are crafted. Materials also play an important role in deciding what kind of rug would be suitable for a room.
• Wool holds the colour splendidly, is strong, cleans up a spill efficiently and is soft on the skin and has commendable insulating properties. However, it is also a good absorber of moisture and sheds in its initial stages.they are also quite expensive when handcrafted and are also passed down as an heirloom investment. Best for living room, dining room and high traffic areas.
• Cotton rugs are on the promising side pretty affordable and are easy to clean. However, on the flip side, there is the problem of durability and it’s not stained repellent. Good for the kitchen, children’s room and casual spaces.
• Sisal, Jute and Seagrass rugs and the like are organic in composition and hence biodegradable and eco friendly. They give the best outdoor vibe and are economical to the pocket. Its major drawback though is that it can get quite coarse and tedious to clean up. Compatible with living room and sunny spaces.
• Leather/ hide/ sheepskin is unique and durable. They are soft. It is great for layering up. On the downside they tend to curl up at the edges and shed accumulates dirt easily giving a dingy appearance and unsuitable for damp spaces. Suitable for offices, dens, etc.
• Silk rugs are soft and finer than wool and very luxurious. But they do not last long and are delicate. Good for low traffic areas.
• Faux Fur/Faux Hide rugs are soft and give an expensive look but they are prone to shedding and difficult to clean. Good for low traffic areas.
• Microfiber/Polyester rugs are inexpensive and easy to clean and can be used outdoors. They are though not advised around toddlers since they are petroleum products and get dirty very quickly. Good for hallways, outdoors, etc.
• Polypropylene Rug is very budget-friendly and resists fading and is easily cleaned. The drawback is that it does not decompose quickly and doesn’t feel luxurious. High traffic and sunny areas.
Many top brands like Sanderson UK Rugs have both natural and synthetic materials. However, each of the materials used has their fair share of benefits and faults which is crucial to understand before you make your purchase.
