Sometimes, things don’t go as planned. So, when a breast augmentation surgery goes wrong, there are repercussions you must endure. No doubt, implants give you bigger, more beautiful breasts; but, like any surgery, this one, too, comes with a set of risks.

Signs something is not right

The following are the early signs indicating something is wrong with your implants:

• Abnormal swelling of the breasts
• Redness around breast skin
• Burning sensation

• “Rippling” of implants – a thin tissue layer envelopes the implant.
• Overall dissatisfaction with the implant surgery.

The last one may not actually be a complication, rather a state of mind. It’s important to keep realistic expectations and discuss with your surgeon what exactly you want before undergoing surgery.

Less common complications

• Allergy to anesthesia
• Formation of blood clot in deeper veins
• Heavy bleeding during the procedure

Breast implant cancer

Well, this is not to scare you; but doctors have found a link between ALCL – Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, which is a cancer of the immune system cells, and breast implant surgery.

This is a rare complication; yet it exists.

ALCL occurs several years after the implant surgery. Its detection sign is a new swelling that develops on either of the breast.

Upon examination of such cases, doctors found an accumulation of fluid around the implant. When the fluid is tested, doctors discover cancer cells in it.

Less accuracy in mammogram

This is yet another complication seen in women with breast implants. Mammogram is an X-ray meant to detect breast cancer. In women carrying implants, it becomes difficult to achieve the kind of accuracy that doctors appreciate. The implants come in the way, says a doctor. Doctors must get additional images of the breasts to screen them properly.

Complication with silicone implants

When silicone implants rupture, the silicone leaks into the breast. Another complication is that it is difficult to figure out the implant has leaked.

The FDA recommends undergoing MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) 3 years after the implant surgery to ensure the implants are intact. Thereafter, you must undergo MRI every 2 years.

Complication with saline implants

These implants pose lesser complications. Even if they rupture, the saline solution is safely absorbed by the body or removed.

It is also easier to figure out the rupture, as your breast will become smaller than the other one.
