Despite the early morning hour, the garden fairies are already awake. The sweet smells of hot apple cider and pancakes fill the fairy kitchen while the garden friends crowd against the front windows of their fairy cottages, peeking from behind the curtains. Outside, the wind is blowing and the snowdrifts have begun to pile up underneath the winter plants and miniature trees. It is a snow day in the fairy garden!

Once or twice each year, the fairies get a big surprise—fairy school is canceled due to fast-falling snow flurries. Instead of making their way over the stepping stones and under the winter plants as they fly to the miniature schoolhouse, the fairies get bundled up in coats and boots. They are ready to play the day away.

Glowing fireplaces provide warmth from inside the fairy cottages, but outside, it’s a winter wonderland! Overnight, the winter container garden has received several inches of snow, and the white stuff shows no signs of stopping. The trolls are rolling snowballs next to the winter flowering plants. The gnomes are building snowmen by the Ajugas. And the unicorns are building a snow stable, ...
... of course. On a snow day in the winter container garden, everyone is up for an adventure.

Look closely, and you might notice some pixies making snow angels underneath the winter plants. In the afternoon, they will run inside the fairy house to help bake cookies and hand out hot chocolate. At the end of the day, after many hours of sledding, ice skating, and snacking, the garden friends will curl up and fall asleep, exhausted from the perfect snow day.

Create Your Own Snow Day
If you want to create a fairy snow day in your own winter container garden, all it takes is a little imagination and a handful of faux snow. While you might be tempted to simply shake some faux snow over your fairy houses and winter plants, there are a few easy steps that will help you turn your miniature garden into a picture-perfect snow day scene.

First, choose your artificial snow. You can use a product like Sno-Wonder, decorate with fluffy cotton balls, or mix baking soda with shaving cream to create your own DIY snow. Once you have decided on a “snow” to use, you can start decorating your winter container garden.

I like to gather together some pinecones, holiday ornaments, and Styrofoam balls. I dab them with white acrylic paint before rolling in the faux snow. The paint acts as a glue. The Styrofoam balls look like snowballs, while the pinecones and ornaments look as though they have recently been dusted in a real snowfall. If I want to add a little glamour, I mix in some white or clear glitter.

After creating these snowy additions to the fairy garden, I decorate the winter container garden with snow, adding it at the base of my winter plants, sprinkling some around my fairy cottages, and piling it up in drifts as though the fairies have been playing in it. Miniature accessories like shovels and sleds add to the “snow day” effect. Be sure to dust your benches, faux miniature trees, and other faux winter plants with the artificial snow. The goal is to create a winter container garden that looks as though it has been coated with freshly-fallen snow. To show that the fairies have been playing outside, use your thumb or the foot of a garden fairy to create little “fairy footprints” in the faux snow. Finally, finish off your winter container garden with a DIY “Snow Day!” sign and some sparkling LED lights.

May your fairy garden enjoy many (but not too many!) happy snow days this year.
