iness in the Middle East is based on the concept of the family. According to the Qur'an, a family must take care of its members. A family has a holy obligation toward its members. The family orientation seems to fit the Japanese group structure, but the group in Japan does not necessarily include the blood family. The Middle East looks at the family as including all blood relatives.
In contrast to a Japanese firm, which emphasizes the group and consensus building, a firm in the Middle East is ruled by the senior male member of the family. It is much more authoritarian and autocratic than is seen in the harmony-based approach of Japan. Even when a senior manager asks for advice, family members understand that the senior member has the cultural right to make decisions. He may listen but does not have to. Americans hire on the basis of specific qualifications; the Japanese, on the basis of character; a Middle Eastern firm must take care of family members first.
A successful businessman may start several new businesses, one for each son, rather than expand the existing business. By doing this he can ensure that after ...
... his death each son will be the senior member in his firm. This setup creates clear lines of ownership and communication and prevents squabbles over who is entitled to do what. It also can create a unique communication code that is difficult for outsiders to decipher. In American firms communication codes are more readily transferable. Pezeshkpur states that Middle Easterners function best if the lines of authority and power are clear.21 The un-certainty connected with negotiating and compromising is culturally more difficult.
Businesspeople in the United States like to toss ideas back and forth and reach a com-promise or consensus after arguing. Middle Easterners prefer for someone to be in charge and make the final decisions. The family orientation and the emphasis on senior-ity meet these expectations. In this environment the establishment of authority through appropriate introductions, credentials, and connections is crucial for success.
