Over the years, cannabis is used across the world for a different purpose. It was used to treat various ailments, including epilepsy, and as an anaesthetic in ancient times. However, in more recent times, one of the most common medical uses of cannabis is pain relief. Here, let us discuss how medical cannabis plays a significant role in the treatment of acute pain.

• Opioids vs. cannabinoids

An opioid is a category of pharmaceuticals derived from the opium plant. It is routinely prescribed for pain management. But, this drug is known to have a high potential for abuse. During the 'opioid epidemic' in 2018/19 faced by the USA and Canada, it was estimated that over 130 people died every day from opioid-related overdoses. So the continual efficacy of opioids is questionable. It was also found that patients develop a tolerance to opioids meaning that doses need to be increased. In the event of overdose, side effects like sedation, nausea, and dizziness also significantly interfere with patients' everyday lives.

On the other hand, cannabis containing cannabinoids chemical compounds is a better option. A few ...
... side-effects like headache, nausea, vomiting, and paranoia are observed. But overdose of cannabinoid has never recorded any case of death.

• Dronabinol and Levenoantradol

Several studies have assessed the use of different cannabinoid preparations in combating pain. Dronabinol and levonantradol are synthetic cannabinoids that are believed to possess pain-relieving abilities. During a study conducted in a trauma centre in Colorado, USA, researchers measured the effect of dronabinol as a treatment for acute pain. It was conducted on patients who received dronabinol as an adjunctive therapy following a traumatic injury. Consequently, the efficacy of dronabinol was found to be more likely to reduce their opioid use. Likewise, another study was conducted to compare levonantradol's analgesic effects with placebo in managing moderate to severe pain. Patients were given an intramuscular form of levonantradol after they were treated for a traumatic injury. In comparison to the placebo, Levonantradol was found to show the significant analgesic effect at each tested dose.
