During the adolescent years, many people suffer from acne. Usually the evidence of this affliction goes away completely, but in severe cases, it can result in acne scars that remain permanently if left untreated. Usually these cases are mild or moderate, characterized by whiteheads or blackheads that don’t scar if they are left to heal on their own. Severe acne, however, can result in nodules, or cysts, which appear below the skin. Unfortunately, those who suffer from severe acne sometimes carry around a painful reminder of this adolescent condition.

Until recently, acne scars had been particularly difficult to remove. Many scars occur at the surface of the skin, but since most acne scars are set below the skin’s surface where the original acne inflammation occurred, it can be rather challenging to minimize their appearance. However, silicone scar treatments can help to reduce the appearance of acne scars.

About Silicone Scar Treatments
If you have scars from acne, silicone scar treatment is an inexpensive, noninvasive way to minimize the appearance of the scars. This scar ...
... treatment has been hailed by many users as the most effective way of minimizing scars. Other treatments, including creams, gels, and oils are also on the market, but many of these other products have not been clinically proven to be effective in scar reduction. Silicone sheets are believed to hydrate scar tissue; this process softens the tissue, and, over time, minimizes the redness of scars.

How InvisiScarâ„¢ Works
Silicone sheeting has been clinically proven to work at minimizing scars. The InvisiScar™ sheet works by being placed directly onto a scar. The silicone patch or disk should cover at least ¼ to ½ inch of extra skin on each side of the scar for maximum effectiveness and adhesion. The patch is secured to the scar with hypoallergenic tape.

At first, the silicone sheet is only used for 1-2 hours out of the day, then this time gradually increases as you become more comfortable wearing the sheet throughout the day. For facial scars, you can wear the sheets at home and remove them before leaving home.

The InvisiScarâ„¢ must always be kept clean so that bacteria does not grow under it.

An important thing to keep in mind using these silicone treatments is to wait until the scar is fully healed. The sooner the scar is treated, the more effectively the silicone can work. Older scars will take more time to minimize than will newly formed scars.

Some people might experience side effects from the InvisiScar™ patches and disks, including allergic reactions at the scar site. If you experience irritation at the covered area, discontinue use for a few days and resume when the irritation has gone away. If the problem continues, a pharmacist might be able to recommend a different adhesive that won’t cause a skin reaction.

If you have acne scars and have ever felt self-conscious about them, silicone patches might be an effective way to treat them. They are an inexpensive, noninvasive, and clinically-proven way to reduce the appearance of acne scars.
