A report from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration showed that more than 50 percent of all single-vehicle accident fatalities involve rollover accidents. Each year, more than 10,000 Americans die in rollover accidents. The report also stated that rollover accidents make up more than 20 percent of all fatal accidents. Rollover accidents are also more likely to result in fatalities than any other type of accident, including those involving drunk drivers or 18 wheelers. Another NHTSA report examined the injury rates associated with rollover accidents. The report uses the HARM scale to measure the overall cost of injuries sustained by rollover accident victims. The study found that victims of rollover accidents in which the vehicle’s roof struck the ground just once were more likely to sustain head injuries. In accidents where the vehicle’s roof struck the ground more than once, victims sustained a higher number of thoracic and abdominal injuries, including broken ribs, punctured lungs, and internal injuries.
